My friend and I were talking in school today about the possibility of Modern Warfare 2 being the greatest game of this console generation. That title clearly belongs to GTA IV. MW 1 is definitely in my top 5 games of this generation, but do you think MW 2 has the potential to surpass GTA IV in that regard?

I had more fun playing Modern Warfare than I had with GTA IV

Can't see it topping GTA IV, Fallout 3 or Dead Rising but it's a definite contender.

The single player is better in GTA IV but, the multiplayer is better in CoD4.  It's just a matter of preference.

You're leaving out a lot of great titles. This generation has been great in that its forced developers to come up with new ways to play with old formulas. MW will no doubt continue to do this, and be very fun. But titles like Bioshock and Deadspace, I believe, will have the most staying power due to being completely and utterly distinct.
 
Don't get me wrong though. GTA IV is still the only game from last year that I play.

Dude...This Console generation is not even half way through and you are already declaring which are the greatest games this generation? Why don't you just wait until this console cycle is done with then make threads about which is the greatest game this generation, huh? I just can't understand why people making claims like that when this cycle isn't even done with and frankly this "Premature Game Ejaculation" is getting on my nerves.

I've got nothing against the Modern Warfare installments, they're great games, however, no one knows what's to come.

no doubt this game will be amazing, but so much pressure is being put on it. itll be in the top 5 greatest games but personally i donno if i would really regard it as the greatest game of the generation

Braid, MGS4, Halo 3, Uncharted 2, Super Mario Galaxy, God of War 3, Bioshock, Portal, The Last Guardian, Half-Life 2 Episodes, etc.
 
Modern Warfare 2 will be one hell of a game, but if it's as linear as previous installments in the series, it shouldn't deserve to be called the best of this generation.

I dunno, this generation isn't over yet so there might be some pretty badass games around the corner.

Call of Duty has the best multiplayer of this generation no doubt, but single player experiences wise, it doesn't come close to other games in my opinion, like Braid.

Doubtful. I'm sure it will be a fantastic game and will earn fantastic reviews, but as the greatest game? That's all a matter of opinion. I personally don't like like GTA games, so that would never be a contender for the greatest game for me.

Won't even be close, the first was a great shooter and smarter than most in the genre, but theres many games already better than it. Modern Warfare 2 won't be as impressive as CoD 4, as walking in you know exactly what to expect from it, you won't be surprised by the new features, as it won't really have anything totally different like CoD 4 did.

What about MW 3? At the rate Activision have been pumping out those games I bet you'll see this before the end of this cycle. Like I said before. Stop making bold predictions and just wait until this cycle is done with. 

i think MW2 will no doubt be good, but weve seen it done plenty of times and i dont find it to be unique anymore
i think assassins creed was unique amazing and the second will be even better

Bioshock so far for me.  Modern Warfare 2 will hopefully turn out to be waaaay better then 4 so we shall see.  How about Samurai Warriors 3 as the greatest game of this generation???  This topic is so stupid >.>

It's too early too tell.

Considering that CoD4 is no where near my my top game of the generation thus far, I really doubt this will even come close for me. LittleBigPlanet and Bioshock can comfortably sit on their thrones.

I'm not sure if MW2 will top CoD4. 
 
CoD4 had some of my most memorable moments in gaming. I'd worry about Modern Warfare 2 being better than it's predecessor before even considering it to be the greatest game of this generation.

Look at Call of Duty 1 vs. Call of Duty 2?
That's how I imagine MW vs. MW 2. 
Call of Duty was a brilliant idea, and was an excellent game.
Call of Duty 2 took it to a whole new level, and made you feel like you were actually in WWII. The gameplay, sound effects, and visuals were so far above all of the competition, making COD 2 the greatest WWII game ever.

If you like shooters then why not. I am not a fan of shooters that much so it wouldn't even be on my list. I can see why it would be on others lists though.
