In games, the player is usually the ambushee, not the ambusher, but certain multiplayer, stealth and open-world games give players a chance to try this sneaky tactic themselves.
Most sinister beings. They burrow themselves inside their human victims, effectively taking over the body.
Term used in first person shooters where most of the game takes place in tight closed quarters.
A gameplay plot twist in the form of revealing non-human monsters to battle after fighting more realistic human enemies for the majority of the game.
Typically naval (ocean or space) in nature, a vessel is considered derelict if it is abandoned, damaged, drifting, or otherwise inoperable. While often scavenged through, very rarely are they completely empty.
The means of Attack by the Locust horde.
Spider-like parasitic animals from an unknown universe with amazing powers of genetic transformation. Introduced in the original Half-Life, headcrabs come in several varieties, all of which are incredibly dangerous to unsuspecting or unprepared humans.
Parasitic lifeforms, often extraterrestrial, that live on or inside other beings. When the time is ready, they burst or leap out from their hosts. Which is usually not beneficial to the host.
Rooms that are either invisible or extremely hidden. Players are rewarded with health, easter eggs, weapons or traps.
A concept where players have the ability to conceal themselves from enemies. Common hiding places in games include closets, lockers, or even just crouching in the shadows.
A method of attempting to scare the player by the sudden unexpected occurrence of an event - often accompanied by some sort of audio sting.
A box, chest, or similar reward beckons you to come near, but it is actually an enemy in disguise. Sometimes can be difficult to differentiate from a real treasure chest.
You're minding your own business looting well-earned containers and chests, but instead of gold or jewels or weapons, out jumps a deadly monster from inside the box!
Sometimes, things are just meant to happen the way they do. Usually triggered by a timer, or by the player crossing a checkpoint.
Sea monsters are sea-dwelling, mythical or legendary creatures, often believed to be of immense size.
Popularized by franchises such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, these games typically involve a strong implication of danger, vulnerable protagonists, and disturbing monsters.
When a video game suddenly presents the player with a room full of health and ammo, perhaps a powerful weapon or two, it's a good bet that an especially challenging enemy encounter or boss fight is soon to follow.
Mutated mammals with incredible speed and strength, the result of genetic modification experiments.
Zombies, more accurately called the walking dead, are reanimated corpses who feed on the living, and have become a ubiquitous video game enemy. They often move slowly, but can be deadly in large numbers, which is unfortunately how they tend to travel. Shotgun time!
