Neue Haas Grotesk is the physical and "pre-digital" version of Helvetica created in 1957. UI designers have started using Neue Haas Grotesk instead of Helvetica in order to get a familiar yet distinctive typeface feel, improved obliques, refined spacing, and to be cooler than their uncultured friends who just use Helvetica.
