Currently sitting with 30 gigs of free space, and the 16 gig part of the game won't download due to insufficient space. Outside of buying a new hard disk, am I essentially screwed? No, there actually isn't anything else to delete. Somehow, a 60 gig HDD (its an only gunmetal gray sku) only has 37 gigs of free space, and 7 gigs is taken up by something other than any games, so not quite sure what to do here.

How much HDD space do I actually need?
basically everything you download off psn will be twice the size it reserves space for the games install so im hearing you need over 40gb free for downloading it

should try to delete big install data of older games that you dont need anymore(or you could always delete some of your pron you got on your hdd)
Who actually saves porn on your hard disk these days. The wonders of being always online frees us from such primitive shackles!
The PSN website says its 15.9.
But it ends up being over 20? I bought a 1TB drive a couple days ago because I'm tired of having to delete games to make space. Just gonna d/l the full games from PSN from here on out and see how far that gets me.

Be that as it may, there are *two* downloads for this game: one 16GB and one 6GB. The post-installed app size is indeed 22GB.
Is it the MGS4 gunmetal gray PS3? Because Google is telling me that came with a 40 gig HDD, so 37 gigs sounds about right, because my 60 gig tells me i have 55 gigs of space available if i where to delete everything. I assume you have already done so but go to "settings/system settings/system information" to double check the available space. If there really is 7 gigs being used up double check the "game data utility" and hit triangle on some of the icons on the XMB, you may have installed something like playstation home and that could be eating up the data and not be obvious.

Ya I'm jsut now downlaoding it and it said about 22GB. Guess their website doesn't mention the 2nd download portion. Put in my 1TB HDD tho so I got plenty of room!
