The Nintendo DS is a handheld featuring two screens, one of which is a resistive touchscreen. Four different models are available: the original DS, the DS Lite, the DSi, the DSi XL.
What is Giantbomb's favourite DS RPG?
Of those I have Pokemon Platinum, Shadows of Almia and Heartgold, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III & IV, Luminous Arc I and II, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, The World Ends With You, FFTA2 and Crystal Chronicles. Some of those I haven't even thought about playing, let alone finishing. It's a super-deep lineup, and I wonder how I'm going to find time to scratch the surface of all those games.
Anyway, my vote goes to SMT: Devil Survivor because I enjoy its presentation and storyline the most of the games that I've played so far, and the SRPG mechanics are addictive and solid. I don't really like how the difficulty starts to spike near the end, and there's also only one save slot so you can't opt out of a hard storyline path and try an easier one.
I'm looking forward to the Golden Sun remake, as I missed that on the GBA. This list is only going to get longer...

You missed playing the original Golden Sun? Pick it up from amazon and find a way to play it. It's too good to miss.
There's a lot. Devil Survivor probably my favorite, though. Dragon Quest V would be in there, World Ends with You, Bowser's Story, Final Fantasy IV. The DS has been great for old school RPGs.
My collection of DS RPG is far beyond my capacity to play, yet there I am, ordering 2 more of them last night from playasia." I don't even feel worthy of voting because I've only played a few of these. You're right though, RPG is my favorite DS genre. "
For the record, it was tough for me, but I voted Dragon Quest V. The old school RPG really did it for me. My collection of DS RPG though is:
- Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
- Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
- Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
- Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
- Final Fantasy III
- Final Fantasy IV
- Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
- Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates
- Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo tales
- Pokemon Diamond
- Pokemon Pearl
- Pokemon Platinum
- Pokemon SoulSilver
- Pokemon HeartGold
- Pokemon Ranger
- Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time
- Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness
- Spectral Force Genesis
- Lost Magic
- The World Ends With You
- Magical Starsign
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner
- Children of Mana
- Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure
- Contact
- Spectrobes
- Disgaea DS
- Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
- Rondo of Swords
- Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer
- Lunar Knights
- Luminous Arc
- Luminous Arc 2
- Blue Dragon Plus
- Heroes of Mana
- Lunar Genesis
- Deep Labyrinth
- Chrono Trigger
- Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
- Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
- Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood
- Mega Man Star Force Leo
- Tales of Hearts
- Tales of the Tempest
- Soma Bringer
- Sigma Harmonics
- A.S.H. Archaic Sealed Heat
- Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
I think that clearly defines me as a fan of RPG - all that on just one console (^_^)
Also for the record, I left off games like Zelda and Izuna, as they are really more action adventure, and the Harvest Moon main series, but this is always a very contentious issue with RPG
" I don't think there is an SMT:Devil Summoner on the NDS. You must mean Devil Survivor. Devil Summoner was released on the Sega Saturn in 1995 and remade for the PSP in 2005, though I don't believe it was ever localized in English. "Correct, that was a typo on my part. Was thinking elsewhere clearly.
I haven't played but a fraction of the ones listed above, but I voted for Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride anyway. I've been pushing that game for more than a year now and it's even on my "All Time Best" list here on Giant Bomb. I just love the conversations and remarks that your party makes throughout the game that sets it apart from most other RPGs on handhelds.
Final Fantasy IV - the whole remake just blew me away, even if the balancing was a little iffy at times.
I also own:
Final Fantasy III - Got about halfway through before conceding defeat
SMT: Devil Survivor - Still stuck on Belder...
Kingdom Hearts 328/2 Days - Finished
Disgaea DS - Only a few chapters in
The World Ends with You - Finished
Pokemon Platinum - Finished
Luminous Arc - Barely started
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time - Barely started
" @oldschool said:Not enough. I am a chronic non finisher. The only game I think I can truly say I finished was Final Fantasy III. Most of the games have been started and then I get distracted, oddly enough, by Advance Wars Dual Strike. Some of them I have given a fair play time - Disgaea, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest IV, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Pokemon Platinum, Children of Mana, Heroes of Mana, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, Lunar Knights, Blue Dragon, Fire Emblem, Lunar Genesis & Lost Magic - they are the ones I remember playing for a decent amount of time.MASSIVE LISTHow many of those have you actually played though? "
Some people have personal preferences due to the differences in the games, no matter how minor. Same goes for Diamond and Pearl. I sure as hell know there is a preference when I brought them home and negotiated with my kids who got what." Why make HeartGold and SoulSilver separate entries? "
Definetly The World Ends With You or Chrono Trigger. I voted for the latter, but both are just as equally great and should be played by any person who says they're a RPG fan.

"The World Ends With You scores big points for being unique. It is like nothing I have ever played before. I hope it gets a new story soon.

I just had to change me fuckin' password!!!
Brad is from Giantbomb, not an RPG silly." Look at my Avatar. Which game is he from. There's yer answer. "
I question Fire Emblem being on the list, as it's more of a strategy game with some RPG elements. I voted for it anyways, because semantics, shemantics.

You level up your characters, which I see (personally) as the single most defining aspect of an RPG. SRPG is by far my favourite RPG. Fire Emblem on the Gamecube still consumes me. I spent 5 hours just beating a single chapter on Hard. So many deaths, so close to completing the chapter and doing all over again, new strategy.

" @Hailinel said:Final Fantasy X-2 was just godawful. It is one of the single worst games I have ever played in my life, from its complete bastardization of the characters and world of Final Fantasy X to the insane 100% Completion requirements to the fact that the 100% completion ending is not worth the time and effort it takes to acquire. I have a friend that actually finished with 100% completion, and she wants every one of those hours of her life back. Me, I couldn't stomach it enough to even come close to finishing it. The only thing I like about X-2 is the piano music that plays over the opening credits. Everything after that causes my mood to swing from basic disgust to a desire to slam my head against a wall to make the hurting stop. That game is garbage." @oldschool said:Really? Well, based on time spent playing I would say the Pokemon games...by VERY VERY FAR. But my favorite DS RPG was probably Chrono Trigger, awesome game. I actually wished it was longer by the time I finished it because it was so much fun. Playing FF3 right now, need to get FF4 and Mario & Luigi sometime soon. Should probably play The World Ends With You at some point also. But yeah, haven't played A LOT of those games.
Well, I thought X-2 was pretty rad, actually, I liked the dressphere combat system better than the one from X proper. But then I barely played X, so I probably don't have the best appreciation of it.
But I still think Lunar DS was the 2nd worst RPG ever. I mean, seriously, an RPG where you can't tell your dudes which enemy you want them to attack? Where you can't earn money and XP at the same time? Man.

" It is Chrono Trigger, but It's soon to be Final Fantasy Gaiden. "High expectations for Final Fantasy Gaiden then? What is so good to raise your expectations?
