Diablo boils down to whether or not you want to do Baal/Cow runs all day to get better gear. It's a great game, sure, but I believe WC3 will serve you better. WC3 has a great campaign, awesome online, and amazing custom maps. Buy WC3 just for the custom maps. You can play tower defense games for half a year if you wanted to.
I loves my Diablo so my answer is totally biased. The Baal runs are key, if you want to get a strong character and good gear. The new act is pretty strong, compared to the other ones as well.
Hard choice man. I would lean toward Diablo myself because that style is my preference but Vinchenzo makes a good argument for going the other way. I am afraid I aint going to be any solid help either way... you could get both :I
