It's hard to believe the director of Iichi the Killer and Audition, both notoriously violent (and awesome) films, is behind the lens of Capcom's now-filming Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney movie, but it's true.

After Miike casually mentioned this as his next project earlier in the week, Capcom has confirmed Miike's the one helping bring Phoenix Wright to life. Capcom plans to release the film (at least in Japan) in spring 2012, but as the news is coming out of Japan, there's no word so far on whether this film will make it outside of there.

Capcom did release Keiji Inafune's wacky live-action Dead Rising production over Xbox Live, though, so anything's possible.

Capcom's also detailed a few bits of casting, including Hiroki Narimiya as Phoenix Wright, Takumi Saito as Miles Edgeworth and Mirei Kiritani as Maya Fey. Is that good casting? You tell me, guys.

Horrible. Whatever the casting would be, I just don't want seeing any of the game's characters as real people. Just that Phoenix Wright image makes me cringe.

Now that is awesome.  Really hope it turns out.

I love Takashi Miike. I love Phoenix Wright. This is fucking AMAZING news.

These characters should all be played by Europeans. What kind of nihonjin has a name like "Miles Edgeworth"?

While I don't see this being able to capture the same kind of magic and weirdness of the actual Phoenix Wright games, I'm hoping it manages to have it's own kind of insanity going for it that will make it awesome in it's own way.

oh shit! can't wait for the lactation scene, and the microphone anal rape scene, and the guys getting cut in half scene, and the combo incest/kiddy porn scene, and the guy eats soup made out of that other guy's jizz scene, and the awkward disturbing feel of it all!

Mirei Kiritani is relatively new to movie, she mostly did TV drama in Japan. Hiroki Narimiya is probably most famous for his role in NANA. And Takumi Saito was in 13 Assassins (he was the young lord whose was kill after Lord Naritsugu raped his wife in the beginning of the movie) Overall, I think this is probably a B movie.

Miike is such a weird choice but I'm also really excited to see how it turns out.

Miike is a pretty diverse director. He did the Yatterman movie a couple of years back, so this isn't outside his wheelhouse.

I'd watch a Ace Attourney animé. Not sure about this...

I saw Ichi the Killer about a month ago. That movie is a shitwreck.

Miike's had a different kind of body of work lately.  If you haven't checked out 13 Assassins yet, you definitely should.  It's sort of a retelling of Seven Samurai, and it's done really well.  I think he's the perfect guy to make a Japanese Phoenix Wright movie. 

Miike is a fantastic director. It's a shame he'll only be known for his super violent over the top films.

For some reason, I keep thinking this'll turn out like The Happiness of the Katakuris. It wasn't a particularly violent movie compared to Miike's usual standard and managed to mix goofy comedy and bizarre murders pretty well. And it was a musical too, in case they decide to go back to that.

It doesn't matter who's directing, the second Maya uses her magic powers, it's all going downhill. He should of just made a Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Old Tokyo movie instead.

What could go wrong?

Takashi Miike has done more than just insane violence and horror.  He's actually a pretty diverse director, and given some of his other projects, this doesn't surprise me.
