You didn't include Diablo 3! Alongside such luminaries as DCUO and Planetside 2, who could doubt it's worthiness?

I don't remember Resistance being all that special. It was fine at the time (mostly due to it having splitscreen co-op campaign) but that's all the good I have to say about it.

With that said I bet Killzone will be the "Resistance" of the PS4 in that most people will forget about it pretty quick and that inFamous will be the exclusive game people actually talk about.

Resistance was supposed to be killer? Does the series get better after the first one because that was the most FPS ass FPS I've ever played.

Most of those aren't PS4 exclusives. For something to be a killer app in the sense that it moves units, it has to be exclusive to the PS4 just like Resistance was for PS3.

Anyway, I guess I'd say Killzone, assuming the community doesn't die out in the first 5 months like KZ3.

The age of big exclusives is over. Especially with the hardware being so similar. And that is a good thing.

As far as exclusives go Infamous looks really awesome. The first two were good and the new one looks like it'll take it a step further.

Resistance wasn't a killer app, it was just all people had to cling to during the early days of the PS3. The killer app inflection point was probably the first Uncharted.

I played Resistance quite some time after the PS3 was released and I found it straight up bad in a lot of places. That game had a cool multiplayer but the campaign was not good.

How many games are actually confirmed to be released around the release of the console itself?

I feel like the new inFamous has the biggest shot of being a system seller. Killzone is...well...Killzone. Its a first person shooter and a pretty known quantity. Everything I saw of inFamous at E3 leads me to believe that they're trying to take the series in a new, fresher direction.

You still have first party games, and Sony has probably the biggest pool of first party developers out of the three major console developers (Nintendo might beat out Sony in regards to volume of game releases if you include handheld games though).

None of those and I don't want a game like Resistance on the PS4 because it was boring from a story and game play perspective.

Seeing this list just reminds me of how weak the PS4 launch is going to be. It's actually disturbingly reminiscent of the PS3 launch. Come to think of it, I don't think any Sony console has had a good launch. Anyway, I voted Killzone: Shadow Fall. It seems like it's going to be similar to what Resistance was for the PS3; a decent but forgettable shooter for the early adopters craving some kind of action / multiplayer experience.

Is Diablo III coming sometime around launch? I could see that moving console systems.

From what I remember Resistance wasn't much of a killer app. It was a pleasant surprise that I didn't expect to be so decent for a launch game. Looking back the game was pretty paint by numbers.

If you want an analogue, although its not a launch title, I would say its the Order. The game is developed by a second party studio that Sony hopes to cultivate into a franchise. It tells an alternate world history in a cinematic fashion from the description the game seems like a linear third person shooter, much like Resistance was a linear FPS.

I wouldn't expect to be any more dismal than what will be there during the launch window for XBO. You'll get a small number of first party releases and half a dozen cross gen multi platforms with the visuals turned up to match up against the PC releases.

Resistance was a system seller? Didn't find the first one particularly good, though I did buy all 3 of them. The 3rd game was the best in the series for me.

Though if anything, I'd say inFamous Second Son looks pretty good. inFamous 1 and 2 were amazing. I'm excited for Second Son.

I think people are underestimating Knack. If it's well done and family friendly to boot, it could sell systems over time. Sony needs a new system mascot, and I think they could do worse than Knack.

Bought Resistance, but wasn't a huge fan of it. The multiplayer was pretty fun for a while but meh. Hopefully whatever else is out will be fun for longer then Resistance was.

Killzone shadowfall is the exclusive shooter a lot of people will pick up at launch and will probably average like 7-8/10 (like resistance did).

But your question is specifically which is the "killer app" in the launch window, to which I'd say inFamous Second Son has a good chance of being a fantastic game.

I think there's been a big shift in terms of exclusives, at least by looking at the consoles stance. Seven years ago when the current generation was new, I think it was Nintendo consoles are bought for 1st party games, and Sony and Microsoft had close to an even amount of quality and unique 1st party games mixed with strong 3rd party (and I think it's blatant that Sony was much better with 1st party quantity than Microsoft's extremely weak 2011 and 2012 lineups). Now it seems going into the new xbox and ps4, that xbox will be mostly 3rd party, Wii U is obviously and sadly not only mostly, but pretty much only 1st party right now, and Sony will straddle the middle with a bit more of a 1st party focus while taking some dumb 'day one dlc' or 'exclusive map' packs away from Microsoft.

Being a not completely awful shooter on the PS3 was enough at the time for something to rally around for the early adopters who painfully had no access to anything resembling the quality of halo. Man those early years were sparse. I feel bad for anyone who adopted a ps3 early.

Shouldn't all the games on this list be exclusives? Nothing that isn't a system exclusive can meet the criteria of your request since it will never be synonymous with the system unless the xbox version is broken or something.

I played the campaign like 7 times in co-op, was really fun at the time but to tell you the truth I don't know how it holds up today.

Yep but out of all of the games mentioned I'm sure The Order and MGSV won't be within the launch window and we'll probably see more of them come next E3.
