I should be revising for an exam. Instead I'm sitting thinking about the PSP Go and this supposed "leak". I've decided the "leak" wasn't a "leak" at all, but was intended. And if not intentional, then by no means detrimental. Care for my logic.
The news of the PSP Go broke around mid-afternoon UK time or early morningish (I think?) in the US on Saturday. The weekend before E3, where anticipation is high, but news is scarce. Everyone's trying to prevent their news breaking right? So these PSP images pop up and are discussed right through the entirety of Saturday.
Here were competing news articles (via Kotaku) this Saturday:
- Assassin's Creed/Splinter Cell 20 second leak.
- Something about a mobile phone game.
- Something about Wolfenstein.
- A $400 Metal Gear coat.
- Some stupid consumer "study".
- A report detailing a new Mario game/new Wii Fit.
Ok, there's your Saturday news in a nutshell. Basically, the only mildly "big" thing were the 20-second Ubisoft leaks. Other than that - NOTHING. Now Kotaku had four articles on the PSP Go:
- Size comparison - 65,225 views.
- Official pictures - 59,437 views.
- PS3 Slim box comparison - 24,845 views.
- Initial leak article - 57,910 views.
Between them that's over 207,417 views from Kotaku alone, not to mention articles on the front-pages (and sticking to the front page due to a lack of other news) on GiantBomb (over 200 responses I believe), GameSpot, IGN, etc. The NeoGaf thread is still on the front page of threads with 255,099 views and 3,011 responses.
Ok, so the point I guess I'm getting to is: a) I don't want to revise and; b) intentional or not this "leak" can only have done Sony good. Everyone has seen their product, talked about it, read about it, and it's still all over all the big sites homepages.
Imagine if it got announced on Tuesday an hour after a new Zelda trailer or something. Yes, the news would still be getting discussed but, hey, would be getting quite the same attention?
Ahh marketing. How I love thee. Anyway, depending on price I'm definitely buying a PSP Go if it meets the following criteria: a) not too expensive; b) PLAYABLE OUTSIDE.
That's all. I have to revise now.
