Well, there won’t be much the PSP2 can’t do if the latest report from Japanese newspaper Nikkei is accurate. The paper is reporting (via Andriasang) that the handheld will ship with 3G support in addition to basic wireless LAN connection capabilities, allowing for, I assume, digital market browsing and online gaming on-the-go wherever a 3G provider has coverage. It’s also reporting that the PSP2 will ship with a “larger than normal” OLED touch screen and a processor which will handle high-resolution visuals.

In Japan, Nikkei believes 3G will be provided by NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese phone, video, and mail provider who, in addition to offering 3G, also broadcasts advanced earthquake warnings. It also has a popular mushroom mascot, who is the hero in Boing! Docomodake DS, apparently.

    No Caption Provided

Nikkei doesn’t discuss any North American specifics on a provider for this supposed 3G support. There’s a commenter in Andriasang’s translation article that supposes publishers will subsidize the support, but that seems a bit farfetched for North American markets. One of the only major devices I can think of that still offers free 3G support is a Kindle and, well... you’re not really using the Kindle and its network to shoot virtual dudes in the face.

The PSP2, by the way, still hasn’t been announced, but it’s almost a given that it will be formally addressed later this week. I’m hesitant to say “take this all with a grain of salt” considering the source, but this device hasn’t even been confirmed yet. Let’s see it first, eh?

I can think of some decent non-intensive uses for 3G support, but overall none of this sounds particularly interesting.

Boing! Docomodake DS is probably the single most stereotypical Japanese game title I've ever heard.

Give me dual analogs and I'll be sold. Rumors and speculation say it's supposed to be pretty goddamn powerful - a working PS2 emulator might be asking a little much, but a man can dream.

I'll take that bet. Considering it took hackers 4 + years to take down the PS3 and they still can't take down the Go, easy money.

So does this mean that the PSP2 and the PSP Phone are the same thing?  Was the PSP Phone thing ever debunked or confirmed?  I really can't imagine that they'll release a PSP Phone in addition to a PSP2 with 3G.

I'm anxious to see how this will pan out. The best case scenario I suppose would be that this thing actually produces visuals on par with the ps3 (given lower resolution). Somehow I doubt it though given all of the gimmicks they're trying to pull with it like a touch screen and touch pad on the back. I wish they would focus on making games that control precisely and not games that are fun only in concept.

Touch screen is pretty cool, and the 3G will appeal to the Asian market that play in public, but I really hope it has two analog sticks.

An OLED screen? no way in HELL. Those are absurdly expensive to make and if those were in mass production we would've heard something about it months ago! BUT, if it IS an OLED screen this PSP2 will cost upwards of 500 dollars :|

The article didn't mention that the PSP2 also folds into a miniature George Foreman grill for convenient low-fat portable hamburger making.

IF they want it to not flop it better be $300 or less. Even then $300 is ALOT for a handheld.

sony definitely doesn't owe me shit, but they're going to have to prove themselves this time around after almost abandoning the handheld through the first iteration.  I'm getting the 3ds, since the ds was what it was, a great handheld.  The psp was pretty good, but it felt like it was never their for their software side.

The sad truth is that it'll get hacked (fairly quickly), people will steal games and it will fail unless they do something drastic to the firmware.

If the psp2 is at least competent enough to run ps2 games like psp does well enough with ps1, I am definitely getting one. Supposing that Sony would put up a ps2 store, just think of that huge great catalog of ps2 games. This got me wondering after playing persona 3 portable on the psp. If they can bring over persona 4 close to its originality, then I am that much more excited.

Honestly, this worries me, not excites me. this thing is gonna be like 400 dollars given all the leaked info. Nintendo is releasing a upgraded DS with glasses less 3D for $250, your telling me that SONY can release this beat at anything below 350 or 400?

as long as the psp2 doesn't cost twice as much as the 3ds, i think we'll see a bit more of a fight on our hands in the hand-held market.
