@4outof5: Who was "pushed out" of the atheist community? And doesn't it stand to reason that if we can make the atheist community to be a generally more friendly environment for women, more might be brought in?

The secular movement is not so fragile that it can't endure some criticism about internal problems, and as more and more people chose a secular life over a religious one, it's going to be more and more apparent that "atheism" doesn't dictate any real values on its own, there's going to be a lot of disagreement over which directions to take the movement in.

In this case, schisms aren't a bad thing, as it indicates that we're not a monolithic group. You can have libertarian atheists, skeptics, humanists, social justice atheists, and hell I guess we even have to acknowledge the Ayn Rand atheists.

As those "Amazing Atheist" videos posted earlier proved, there's certainly a strong anti-woman subset of atheists.

I obviously can't explain why every person was turned off by all of this, I personally find it smells of people trying to push agendas that really have nothing to do with atheism and skepticism. The petty bickering between the "sides" has certainly limited my involvement in the online atheist community.

Are you suggesting that the atheist community as a whole has been unfriendly or unwelcoming to women? I have personally never seen that. I have seen people push back on things like atheism + but I don't think that makes them unfriendly or unwelcoming to women or any other minority. I personally agree with almost everything atheism + stands for but I don't think there needs to be a litmus test to find out who is the "real" atheist are. I don't think we should work to divide ourselves just as we start to come into our own as a political force (yeah even the Ayn Rand people) we're all on the same team when it comes to some of the most important issues facing society today. In the next 10 to 20 years we really might have a chance to reverse some of the damage religion has inflicted on this country if we can get our act together; instead of seeking some sort of thought purity inside the movement we should be looking for ways to bind ourselves together.

And as far as our banana loving friend Mr. atheist goes I find it very hard to believe that he is anti-woman, he surely disagrees with some (most lol) feminist thoughts but I find it hard to assign malice or hatred to those thoughts/arguments.

(man is this off topic maybe we should take this to PMs if you want to continue)

Edit: man did I use personally as a crutch in this, sorry if it makes it unreadable

This is all so intellectually dishonest and harmful. You are not a bad person for making or enjoying games that don't pander to the "right" people and you shouldn't be shamed for doing so. You are not being brainwashed to dislike or treat women unfairly by video games just like you are not being made more violent by them. Anyone (however well intentioned) who is suggesting otherwise is insulting you and the hobby. I also find that in a world we live in that a woman who was truly concerned with women's issues could find much greater cause for alarm with the treatment of women in Africa and the Middle East (and I'm not just talking about Muslim societies.) There is a real crisis there that we should all be working to fix, but maybe especially those of us that claim to put women's issues at the forefront of our life's work...you know unless we are just working on a soulless Kotaku style cash grab on youtube.

I think we can all agree that being unintentionally creepy is not being sexist it's just being unintentionally creepy and that men should know better but some don't and as long as no one got hurt it was a learning experience for said creepy dude and we're all better for him having learned an important life skill so that we can move on from the MRA nice guy victim B.S. some posters are bringing to the table. And as a side note all "elevator gate" ended up doing was pushing people out of the greater atheist community (and pushing some idiots who like the sound of their own voice into the atheism plus movement where they are hopefully to be quarantined) and as a public issue nothing of positive note came of it. It only hurt the community and solved nothing (not that there was something that needed to be solved in the first place.)

Please go to another website, we don't need any (more) console warriors here. You're just going to get upset when you eventually get banned here too. Maybe you should go open a blog or something.

Hey everyone get's some "feel good points" for pointing out how some shitty statue is shitty. No god damn shit actually murdering and cutting up a woman is bad (or a man). This is a video game character, in a violent video game it's not real. If this offends you why doesn't every violent act committed in a video game? Are you going to start reporting every time an act of violence is committed in a video game/video game marketing?

Meanwhile there are still girl's being sexually mutilated in the middle east/africa. Women are still paid less than men for doing the same job. Domestic violence, rape, and sexual harassment are just as prevalent as ever, but here we are trying to rack up our social justice feel good points like they're achievement points over some meaningless crap. The faux outrage is so shallow if you dove into it you would break your neck.

Yes I agree with you. You should cut your line internet or at least never go to a video game related website again. This will be good for you and good for the rest of us. You don't want to read things that might upset you about meaningless things in your life and we don't want to watch you stick your fingers in your ear and hop foot to foot shouting "neener neener neener I can't hear you!"
