Games I Finished in 2024

List items

  • Pretty fun beat 'em up, but the minor load between every single screen kinda killed the momentum occasionally. In my memory, that wasn't an issue in the first game, but maybe I have rose-colored glasses on. The soundtrack in this one didn't hit nearly as hard for me, either.

  • This feels like a smaller, more slimmed down version of Dontnod's earlier games. Like if Life is Strange was stripped bare to a visual novel where they explicitly show you the whole map of possible choices up front. The art is really pretty and there is some great voice acting, but the story didn't really resonate with me all that much, sadly. I think there is too much "tell don't show" in the writing and that hurts it a lot.

  • Really pretty puzzle platformer, enjoyed it quite a bit. Plus you get a cute companion!

  • Fantastic puzzle game, I burned through it in 2 sittings. Really neat mechanics that are trippy but manage to make you feel pretty smart without being complete brain burners. This might have bumped Viewfinder off my GOTY list from 2023 if I had played Cocoon last year.

  • This game is insane in a lot of ways.

  • Neat concept for a game, using SRPG mechanics as the investigative gameplay in a detective game. I just wish the ratio of investigation section to visual novel reading was higher. They become more frequent near the end of the game, I just wish it was paced that way earlier on.

  • Cute little fairytale inspired action game, I think I liked this better than the developer's previous game, Echo Generation. You can see a lot of the shared DNA with the voxel art and the point-and-click inspired "use item on item" puzzles, but this game felt more focused, I found myself getting lost far less often.

  • Cool little firefighting platformer. Gets challenging at times, you really need to hunker down and concentrate to clear out the big areas where fire is constantly spreading.

  • I wasn't expecting this to go so hard in the Grimm's Fairy Tales sort of direction, there's some pretty creepy enemies and nasty stuff you encounter that I thought was cool. Enjoyable little puzzle platformer.

  • Fun arcade/puzzle game!

  • RGG just can't let go of Kiryu, can they? But I am super pumped for Infinite Wealth now though! I also hope they bring back the Agent fighting style from this in a future game, it was quite fun.

  • Fantastic little platformer that I discovered! It has what might be my favorite art in a game in a while, it is just so kinetic and evocative, everything about it just pops. Feels fantastic to play with some fun music as well.

  • I'm surprised how good this still looks for a decade-plus old game, I can see how it would have been impressive at the Xbox One launch. The gameplay is a lot of timed button pressing, but it was a bit of mindless fun.

  • I love the goofy musicality of these games. This sequel had a bit more diversity with the level design, which I appreciated, each of the areas felt a bit more unique and distinct.

  • Things were a bit rough over the holidays, and this ended up accidentally becoming my "mindless escape from the world" game after browsing through PS Plus. I was not anticipating the campaign taking like 40 hours to finish though, I finally polished off the last couple levels recently.

  • Definitely inspired by Portal, but still enough of its own thing with an interesting core mechanic. Enjoyed it far more than I expected, I must say!

  • Awesome game, loved it! Fun and silly and great animation and sense of style. Controls amazingly well, and there are a surprising amount of levels with unique, one-off mechanics.

  • I don't see "Vacant Kingdom" in the database, so using this prologue/demo instead. But I played through the full game.

  • Enjoyed this a bit more than the reviews let on. It is a nice, short (10 hour) experience that tells a pretty good sci-fi story without a lot of filler. The Souls-y third person shooter gameplay is decent enough, there are some interesting mechanics with the different guns having elemental effects that play off each other and the environment.

  • This is a fun little game, really beautiful art and a fun, expressive tone. Fun combat mechanics that really make you feel like Zorro. Wish it was a little longer, I wanted more after the 4 main chapters, but there at least is an arena/endless mode.

  • Pretty darn good remake, up there with the RE2 remake for sure.

  • fun puzzler

  • fun chillout game

  • Great little 8 hour or so RPG, would love for there to be more shorter games in this genre that still feel meaningful in terms of progression.

  • This damn game is the most addicted I have been to a game in a while.

  • This is the first 'soulslike' that has hooked me in a hot minute, enough so that I actually finished it. There's a lot of nice, minor quality of life things, the weapon system is interesting, and it is challenging but not overly so. Big thumbs up from me, I hope the post-credits teaser comes to fruition and we get a sequel with some other public domain folklore.

  • Had never heard of this game, but it showed up on Game Pass and I gave it a try. Fun little top-down action game with a cool art style, sort of reminded me of Moon a bit. A little too dialogue-heavy at times for its own good, but I appreciate the worldbuilding.

  • Cute game that really appealed to my overzealous organizational side.

  • Short but sweet narrative experience with excellent voice acting and a neat 60s retro-futuristic aesthetic.

  • Cute and silly exploration-centric platformer.

  • I wish the core ideas in this were expanded out a little more, maybe with more intricate level design or more difficult encounters. Still enjoyed my time with it though. The narrative aspects were more in-depth than I had expected, pretty good writing and characters.

  • Had a dumb fun time with this, was an enjoyable 25 hours or so.

  • One of my favorite retro-styled FPSes in recent memory, even with no familiarity with the Warhammer license/universe. Just feels good to play, with (mostly) excellent level design, and fun, challenging encounters.

  • I appreciate the slightly more in-depth gameplay in this sequel, but the repetitive nature wore out its welcome by the end of the very short runtime.

  • Basically Jet Set Radio 3, had a great time chilling out with this game.

  • What a lovely game. Great art and presentation, and the story had me feeling pretty emotional by the end.

  • Been a long time since I have played or enjoyed a Ubisoft game (barring those Mario + Rabbids games), but this game is legit fantastic.

  • Really enjoyed this game, cool pixel art style that looks awesome in motion.

  • The Best Trine game by far, ton of cool and interesting powers. A+!
