GOTY 2011

Shit, I don't think I actually played 10 games that came out this year this year. I remember a lot of Dragon Age II, a lot of Fallout: New Vegas, staying up till 3 in the morning to finish Dead Space 2, The ending of Deus Ex: Human Revolution (No, the good part of the ending. Yeah, that part.), and everything else is kind of a blur. Uh assume I'm still playing Bastion and everything after 9 is my backlog. Now if you'll excuse me apparently I need to figure out what exactly it was I did in 2011.

List items

  • Like I said I'm currently in the middle of actually playing Bastion and somehow it's still the top of my list. But look! There's a unique and vibrant art style, a clever, innovative, and apparently sexy method of narrative, great soundtrack, and a story that I can actually stand and argue as complex and mature while still being compact and not labyrinthine. We barely ever get that last one in modern games, it's always go there and shoot that thing or a near never ending epic in an elaborate world that takes painstaking steps to flourish how deeply it's built so that it detracts from the conceit of its central story. Bastion doesn't do that.

  • Good story, good graphics, good slurry of swears from the newly voiced protagonist. That and it still has also those gory death scenes that make me wimper in my sleep.

  • It's funny. We don't get enough funny games.

  • I'm an aesthetics bitch, and yes that includes UI design. DICE really fucked up the menus for BF3. Not battlelog mind you, that's the stat tracking equivalent of the always marvelous Burton website. The menus within BF3 itself though are an unrefined mishmash of elements placed in the most inconveniently possible places.

But menus aside, dude it's a Battlefield game, and the medic plays like BF2142 so fuck those menus I'm gonna keep playing this game for a long ass time.

  • Shit, I'm actually having trouble describing why I think this game is so damn great. It's the world, that much I'm sure of. Every little thing in the world is so perfectly formed, from the architecture to the furniture to the fashion, is so beautifully crafted yet believably mundane in design. It's like if modern architecture and the Ikea catalogue had a child who then wed the child of Equire and Vogue magazine and had augmented futuristic offspring in the form of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's visual aesthetic.

Also, you know, everything else great about this game. And the fact that it all looks exactly like its concept art is amazing.

  • Best Villain of the Year. Just the spirited delivery of inFamous 2's Bertrand convinced me that this man actually believed in his actions, that all his evils were necessary to end the ills upon the city. Even his selfish personal reason for hating everyone for superpowers was executed as a completely believable motive for his crusade. And then they fuck it up in the latter half by saying he's making monsters and is only in it for the cash.

Also I'm a sucker for an old southern politician's accent.

  • Oh shutup, it wasn't that bad. Remember this is a list of everything I played this year and then some.

  • You know this game actually was kind of repetitive. But look! It's the cannily detailed face of Kenneth Cosgrove and everyone else from Mad Men. And they're all wearing such fine suits and driving cool cars in the beautiful simulation of an LA long lost to time and that damn highway system.

  • Once again still haven't actually played this game yet, but it's the top of my backlog.

  • AKA: The rest of my backlog that isn't Skyrim so; Saint's Row: The Third, Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, etc.
