Top 10 Nintendo DS Games - My Collection

Another day, another list. The 3DS was just released and basically marks the end of the Nintendo DS. Now is the time we should look back and consider the games that the system had to offer. This time, I went through my personal collection of DS games and decided which ones I thought were the best. Please note a few things before reading:

- I do not own all of the games that I wish to own on the DS, so the list would probably look different had I owned/played those
- I have allowed franchises to have multiple entries on the list
- Only games released in North America have been included

List items

  • I loved Pokemon Gold/Silver. When I heard that they were releasing a remake on the DS, I nearly wet myself. I was not disappointed. The remixed tracks, historic gym leaders, and overall adventure were very nicely done and, as an added bonus, the difficulty was significantly raised and added some extra challenge. Later on, you obtain an item that lets you play the classic versions of the game's songs which catered exactly to its intended audience - people like me. I don't think a remake could get any more perfect aside from replacing the visuals with Gameboy visuals. It could be because of bias, but I truly feel like this is the best my DS collection has to offer.

  • Tetris is one of the most universally recognized video games of all time. Tetris DS retains the classic gameplay and adds a few extra modes to boot. All are pretty equally fun, but the main mode is what you get the game for. There is also multiplayer, online and offline, for each mode. I bought the game for full DS retail and I would say that it was worth the money.

  • A lot of people would argue that the Pokemon franchise should have been put to rest a very long time ago, but I would argue that. Pokemon Diamond provides a classic Pokemon adventure, a fresh set of Pokemon, moves, items, and abilities, as well as a new look to fit the capabilities of the DS. I really enjoyed Diamond and I do plan on playing Pokemon White in hopes that it is just as good, if not better.

  • I'm not big into Final Fantasy, and I even question why it's so popular sometimes. Final Fantasy IV answered that question for me when I bought it just a couple of months ago. Story-driven with typical JRPG gameplay, FFIV is definitely a quality title. I have not played the original or the GBA remake, but this is certainly something to behold. I also haven't gotten very far into the game as of yet, but I definitely think that it deserves to be somewhere high up on the list. Some flaws that I see in this game that are common to most JRPGs include annoying random encounters, linear gameplay, and some terrible voice-acting that kills some scenes by providing some laughs. However, these are minor in the grand scheme of things as shown by how high up on the list this game is.

  • A Mario re-boot on the top 10 list? Heck yeah! While I'm not the biggest Mario fan, New Super Mario Bros. brings all the classic platforming action of Mario to the DS with a few new twists. Awesome level designs, new powers, and a rockin' soundtrack come together to bring this game on the list. There's not much more to say about the game, as it is a Mario game, afterall. I would recommend it, however, as well as its Wii offspring (at a discount, of course.)

  • Kirby, Kirby, Kirby! Canvas Curse was the first Kirby game to come to the DS and it really didn't receive a lot of attention. This may be partly due to the fact that it was very early in the life of the DS and really broke away from the Kirby formula. This game fully utilized the touch screen of the DS and, in my opinion, did so very well. Though this isn't the best of the Kirby franchise, or my DS collection for that matter, it's certainly different and fun, at that. Drawing paths for Kirby to roll along can get pretty hectic at times and, along with the games gorgeous visuals and remixed versions of classic Kirby songs, lands it a spot on the list.

  • This is the first and only Advance Wars games that I own and it is quite a title. From the awesome visuals to the quite catchy soundtrack, Advance Wars: DS (see what they did there?) is definitely top 10 material. I enjoy the turn-based strategy gameplay, being a big fan of Fire Emblem (which is mysteriously absent from this list *cough*), so I really enjoyed this game. The big downfall of this game is the laughable story and generally unlikable characters. These are minor, however, and provide a nice campaign to play through.

  • Mario Kart is a staple in any given Nintendo console's library. Though seemingly similar, each one brings something new to the table while keeping true to its formula. Mario Kart DS is no exception to this rule as it is the first Mario Kart game to go online through the Nintendo Wi-Fi feature on the DS. The classic racing mode is there, as always, but there are a couple of alternate modes that caught my attention more. In one mode, you have balloons attached to your kart and the goal is to pop the balloons of the other players while defending your own. It's wildly fun to play with friends and makes use of some of the DS's lesser recognized features.

  • Even though, in my opinion, this is the least of the Animal Crossing franchise, Wild World did a lot to revolutionize the Gamecube classic and it brought it to the handhelds - something every Animal Crossing fan had dreamt of. To fit into the DS cartridge, many features were stripped, the size of the town was cut significantly, and 4 players were forced to share the same house, but the magic of Animal Crossing remained prevalant in this little game. While it's not my favorite DS game, it certainly deserves a spot on the list.

  • Who would've ever expected to see a recent Sonic game make it into a top 10 list? Granted, there are probably other DS games that I plan on getting eventually that would easily knock this one out, but I chose from my personal collection. Sonic Rush came out in the midst of some of the worst console Sonic games the world has ever seen. It brought some classic Sonic gameplay to the table with a couple of twists. Sonic's new abilities really complimented the classic gameplay pretty well and the visuals are very nice. The only real problems with this game are some flaws in level design later on and a story that would make you wanna hurl. Being able to play as Blaze, Sonic's cat companion, is a nice feature, but I have yet to beat the game on her "mode."
