GOTY 2011

My GOTY list may or may not change, as I've acquired a lot of the heavy hitter games off of the current Steam sale, and haven't had enough time to play through them, thus is why Saints Row 3, Batman: AC, Witcher 2, and a few others are absent in this list. But, here we go!

List items

  • When they announced this game at last year's Spike VGA's, I already knew this was my GOTY for 2011. Elder Scrolls open world, great(and lots and lots and lots) of sidequests, and infinite dragons. 70+ hours in, and I still haven't gotten through the main storyline yet.

  • My first venture into the Deus Ex franchise was Invisible War, and I could never get into the first Deus Ex for some unknown reason (it's just too old I guess?). Human Revolution takes what was great in the first and second game, and blended them together to make a game that actually focuses on your choices and streamed how you wanted to play. Minus the boss fights (which there aren't many), it's an extremely good cyberpunk RPG that you should totally play.

  • I thought Portal 1 was extremely overrated. Short puzzle game that was entertaining and introduced some neat physics, but didn't think it deserved all the praise it got. Portal 2, however, absolutely does deserve praise. The writing and delivery of said writing is the charm that this game brings, along with crazy physics puzzles that blow Portal 1 out of the water of "I can do that?" sort of puzzles. It really is a great game, and I highly suggest you pick it up on the next Steam sale.

  • It's really hard for me to consider this an indie game, because it's just THAT good. The narration and great soundtrack are what make this game just that much better. You can tell Supergiant Games put numerous hours of work into this gem and carefully created a colorful apocalyptic world. One helluva game.

  • As a frequent Battlefield: Bad Company 2 player, this went above and beyond my expectations. Great multiplayer that actually rewards teamwork rather than K/D ratios. My multiplayer GOTY personally.

  • Gross, demented, brutal, but Goddamn is it fun. 2011 is the year of reintroducing Rogue-likes.

  • Speaking of Rogue-likes, Dungeons of Dredmor is a Rogue-like. Permadeaths galore, diggles, cyborg zombies, potions, spells, weapons and traps that will fuck you up, but the humor really just tops it off. Great game, and I'm looking forward to the updates the creator brings.

  • I'm getting kinda burnt out on zombies, but Techland somehow was able to make the open world survival zombie game genre work. Analog melee combat is one of the coolest options in this game, and I really hope future games (looking at you, Bethesda!) can implement it just as well.

  • Skillshots are pretty awesome. Oh, and dicktits.

  • Came out in the US this year, so it totally counts. Only game I've played on my DS this past year after collecting dust. It's still Pokemon through and through, and I enjoyed it.
