The 10 best games of 2016!

Ok, so 2016 has been a big mess. Between presidential elections, seperating from the EU and even straight down to the moviescene, there has been no real victories (I still get really angry every time I remember Suicide Squad exists). But lo and behold, while I can't speak much for the musicscene, because I tend to stay in my safe little 60's-90's Pop/Rock/Metal zone (Rest in peace David Bowie and Prince), I do know of one genre of entertainment that has not been disappointing! As the world comes crumbling down upon us, be it by nukes or just 2016's big finale, at least we have some just straight up amazing video-games that has really raised the bar this year. What follows is my top ten favorites of the year, and if you are still reading this, I'm sorry.

List items

  • I've never been the biggest fan of online gaming. I did play some Halo back in the day, and I try my way in every BattleField game that comes out, but I've never had a game that just made me long to get home and play more, dedicating whole weekends to it, not because I wanted to "Pwn n00bs" (Do people still say that?), but because I was legitimately having fun. Then Blizzard came sneaking by with an online shooter called Overwatch.

I was already interested in the game, thanks to the amazing revealtrailer they released in 2015 (Was it 2015? Feels like it was). The second I saw Tracer, I was in love with the games charm, and decided that even this game was basically nothing but an online shooter, I would play it.

I did not however, expect how much I would love it. Let me make it clear: This is the best game of the year, hands down.

It's fun, it's charming, it's fast paced, it has a great feeling of "I can do one more before bed, sure!"

I mean, what else could you expect from Blizzard, professional social life killers?

I haven't played nearly as much as I'd like, but with this being Blizzard and additional content being on the way for next year, this is a game I will not stop playing. Zooming around as (newly confirmed lesbian) Tracer and griefing a poor Reinhardt, annoying my friends with my really bad impressions, is something that will for me, go down as one of the best experiences I have ever had in a videogame ever.

  • How did they even manage this? I thought Doom was dead after 3! And it broke my heart. I've played Doom 1 and 2 since I was a kid, and they are both up there as some of my favorite games, so I did go cautiously into this, hoping it wouldn't be too bad and make me relive the memories of how sad I was when I played Doom 3.

Boy was I wrong! Oh my god, this game is so much fun! And so fast! And it looks so great! Back was the feeling of a great bullethell shooter, visceral and gnarly, where everything I did made me like like roaring throughout the house because I felt so awesome doing it!

While the multiplayer may not have been perfect, I still had tons of fun playing this and my friend is still making snapmaps whom he forces me to play through, all nearly impossible. Must be payback for last years Super Mariomaker incidents.

  • I mentioned best experiences in videogames in my number one spot. The Hitman series hold another. Back to the days of Hitman 2: Silent Assassin in fact!

Me and a friend would do weekend sleepovers, doing nothing but playing Hitman, scheduling each and every single action, reaction and traps to the point where we could go in unspotted, get the bad guy(s) and saunter out without raising any suspicion.

I can't stop thinking of these amazing days and nights as I play every new level, every escalation, every contract of this game. I love planning out the entire level by walking around, all hints and opportunities turned off, just taking it all in, seeing what happens if I disturb this npcs route, or what happens if I push this button. I am really excited for season 2, and I think going with episodes is the best way they could've handled it, especially considering the size of the maps and the incredible span of things you can do. Also, you can fling a katana and have it stick in a persons face and that is hilarious.

  • I love the From Software games and how great they make me feel at videogames when I somehow beat a boss after doing nothing but dying for two hours. This years contribution was no different, and I still really enjoy getting killed over and over to suddenly just find my pacing and feeling like I can see the Matrix.

  • I don't really do "planning". It's never been a big part of my strengths and I usually don't need much of it done to do what I do to get money for food.

Then along came Stardew Valley. A cute little Harvest Moon homage, which lead to the downfall of my no planning lifestyle. I was taking notes, "Remember to buy Kale today, to maximize earnings for this spring" and "These people have birthdays this month, so stock up on their favorite thing". And I can't stay angry at it, I love this little game so much!

  • SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT! SUPER! HOT!

  • Say what you will about the Uncharted series; they are pretty amazing rides. From the stealthsections where you can SWING FROM A ROPE AN PUNCH A DUDE to being dragged across a muddy river by a huge car, they are anything but subtle. While not as amazing as 2, it's certainly alot better than 3, and deserves being on this list!

  • I love the story of this game, and I love the look. The game is so beautiful, the city feels alive, the characters are well realized, and the themes are handled correctly. And the game is just real fucking violent, like holy crap, some of those finishing moves made me cringe real bad!

  • With a good story and an amazing multiplayer, you would wonder why this game is not talked about each and every single day. It has giant mechs, grapplinghooks and it's so fast, oh my god, you can't even imagine if you haven't played it!

  • Do I have to say anything? It's civ, you know the deal. One more turn, highly addictive, excuse me, I have to play more now.
