Games of the decade 2000-2010

Technically it's eleven years but who cares. My favorite games of this past decade.

List items

  • I don't usually jump into the bandwagon of modern videogames, usually because I come late since new games are too expensive, but Resident Evil 4 was an (gifted) exception.

Besides being a reboot for the franchise, it's one of those games that set standards among the genre and cradles a new wave. I'm proud to have been in the scene when this game arrived as the culture around it is very intense.

  • Silent Hill 2 is the scariest game I've ever played. An ominous premise builds up along oppressive environments where monsters with a freudian touch dwell in.

It's still an old school survival horror at the gameplay level, but that doesn't stop this from being one of the most geniously disquieting videogames ever made. It beat every movie and other videogame in that regard.

  • I hit the ceiling with the brick I shat at the end of this game. Not as scary or oppressive as Silent Hill 2 but it's a top notch survival-horror game that deserves to be played by anyone that loves interesting characters and beautifully unclean environments full of atmosphere.

  • The DS game started it but the Wii game perfected it. 4 player madness along with clever levels, modern moves and new power-ups make this return to 2D platforming by Mario fully realized.

  • The sequel to the cult game Hotel Dusk is bigger and better than its predecessor. Kyle Hyde has a full apartment building to uncover secrets from with dialogue and puzzles that require quite a bit of ingenuity to solve.

The music is better, the characters are more interesting and the plot is deeper which makes you appreciate all the bait that the game slowly throws at you.

  • Animal Crossing finally got where it belonged, in a handheld.

Appropriate for a quick 5-10 minute play, this game is wonderful at enchanting you with cute characters with their quirky lines and adorable expressions.

Multiplayer is possible by having people come to your town and vice-versa, to trade all sorts of stuff. A DS gem no doubt.

  • It's still Mario, but damn is it some good Mario action. Imaginative levels inside a magical world make this one of the best in 3D platformers.

Gameplay is very well thought out except some orientation issues and the music is great, though not much of it stands on its own.

  • While not a dramatic jump as Resident Evil 4 was, its predecessor refined even further the classic Resident Evil experience.

Amazing music and mostly functional, non-distracting gameplay carry this game with a good atmosphere. Characters were developed decently and some weird ones are present in this 2001 installment of the series.

  • The world of Aliens is laid out flawlessly in an excellent thrilling game that adds Predators to an already busy conflict that has flickering lights, gooey wall textures and skinned bodies as the essential décor to frighten the toughest of Marines, empower the most vicious of Aliens and amuse the most badass of Predators.

  • It's the whole experience in short. Being in Rapture makes us see the future through the eyes of 1960 and it's nothing short of amazing the way this game delivers the twisted characters in this beautiful, dystopian underground city.

  • Creative puzzles and an impish sense of humor are this game's bread and butter. Unlike anything you'll ever play, while it lasts.
