Underrated games

just games I feel are underrated and innovate ideas that are worth just mining out for inspiration for game designers.

work in progress

List items

  • the mario game that's took a lot of chances in it's game design. No health bar, instead it's about separation with the baby, and there's always something new in order to change the gameplay.

Plus Poppy Seeds makes yoshi dissorented and unable to walk

  • beat em up and shoot em up combined with multiple path storyline which is a love letter to the creator.

  • Capcom took the natural evolution to most genres by just slapping together RPG elements to a beloved style. But nothing as horrible as comparing pants numbers for poison resistance and archane magic. Instead what we got is a simple design easy to jump in and rewarding in the long run.

  • the problem with collecting games is that you collect something just to unlock other things. Never getting a chance to use them. Here all those items you collect them into an epic battle of shooting cannons at one another. The design of it is simple enough nothing too overly complex.

  • really this is about the feel of the controls. Something easy to flow into combat that anyone could play it.

  • Depth is not what you expect. In fact this game is OVERWHELMINGLY COMPLEX. But vastly rewarding if you dig in deep into it's own depths. By the time you play as the third character a lot of the game's mechanics have already made sense.

  • best use of design and license music, pushing the idea of what is entertainment. The alternative from the extreme of children's cart clones and super realistic simulation racers.

  • Samurai Showdown and Soul Calibur seem to take on another direction which I'm not sure they are going with. Still this is super simple design sword fighting, plays more like Alpha and as coloful as alpha series.

Not the best fighting game, but solid.

  • Colorful, beautiful design

the problem with fighting game is at some point they slap everything onto it, you want to have depth and not scare people away. This is probably the most elegant Street Fighter has ever been.

  • learned mistakes from Odin Sphere, a far more simpler game

  • power up through abuse, an early hint to what would later become the Wario Ware mini game and Rhyhtm Heaven series. Much more rewarding to collect something and it's actually something then just dull uninspired single coin.

  • as much as that WACKY contraption of a sun sensor as a power meter is used. Early on your transformed into a Vampire boy. So your running from shade to sunlight in order to play this game.

  • The finally for the Fatal Fury games, as excellent as Street Fighter 3 was it alienated it's own audience. This is still a considerable jump away from Fatal Fury Real Bout or even King of Fighters, but it's easy to jump in, closer to the Alpha series.

  • this was released the same month as Zelda Twilight Princess was released and then proved there is a way to reinvigorate this genre of adventure games with bold innovative characters.
