Gaming sequels never to come

We all have them and we all know what games spring to mind whenever somebody asks you. You play a game and sink sweet, precious, valuable time into it until you conquer it. Watching the credits roll you ponder at the thought of a sequel to the game so you can return to the world you sank many hours in. Maybe the game even sets up a sequel at the end of the game giving you, even more, reason to be excited. You wait until the dreaded day comes when you realize there is no sequel coming. This can be for many reasons like bad sales, studio shutting down, it was in development then ended up getting canned. Well, today ladies and gents I wanted to give you the games I know won't be getting a sequel that breaks my gamer heart.

Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy: One of my favorite games coming out of the ps2 era as a kid Psi-Ops blew my mind. You play as Nick Scryer and you wake up with no memory trying to take down the evil organization known as The Movement. It was your standard third person shooter with one exception you possessed access to awesome psychic powers. With its tight controls and cool ragdoll physics creating some hilarious gameplay when you would telepathically slam people into walls, explosive barrels, or drop them off a ledge hearing them scream until they inevitably die. You could burn people with pyrokinesis, mind control enemies to solve puzzles or turn them onto their fellow squadmates, mind drain opponents to cause their head to explode, remote viewing to see through walls and scout out rooms, and aura viewing to see invisible mines and fight aura beast. Using these powers you fight your way through The Movement's head honchos and defeat the general effectively saving the world. You are treated with an endgame cutscene that ends with this message.

The kid in me still wonders what happens after that screen to this day. With Midway closing and nobody taking the rights for the game and I will always have to live with the fact that I won't be getting any closure for this game especially for something with so much potential.

Heavenly Sword: A title which many may have missed out on due to a struggling Ps3 in it's beginning years. Heavenly Sword is a third person action game where you play as Nariko battling the tyrannical Bohan and his army from wiping you out and creating a golden era. You take hold of powerful sword aptly named after the title of the game to combat him and trying to save your village. Being this was Ninja Theory's second game and first, as Ninja Theory, formerly known as Just Add Monsters, it came as a surprise to me that it was actually really good. The world was interesting and the setting was different being more of a traditional eastern vibe to it. The soundtrack added to that feeling sounding like something you would hear in an old kung-fu movie. The combat was so smooth and fun to play with switching from the three combat styles of fast ranged attacks, medium dual bladed, and one large heavy blade. There were plans to have a sequel, but it was announced in 2010 the game was canceled due to poor sales from the first game and the developer later stating that a sequel was "extremely unlikely". Due to the Ps3 not having the greatest launch year most folks didn't get a chance to play this gem and its a shame. Maybe if Sony did a better job with the Ps3 launch we could have a sequel to an underrated game and return to this interesting world Ninja Theory built.

What are some of your games that you know will never get a sequel? Do you think it will happen eventually? Also, what did you think of the games above and do you think they should get a sequel as well. Let me know and as always have a nice day.

Battlefield Bad Company 3

It sucks that, at least at the time, a lot of console peeps thought Battlefield 3 was the sequel to Bad Company 2 because of the lack of Battlefield presence on consoles prior. They did pave the way for BF3 feature-wise but I don't really see how a continuation would work out apart from the single player :/

A new Republic Commando game.

Although, who knows. If Battlefront becomes a regular enough release, I could see the single-player campaign for one of its releases to go in that direction.

KOTOR is a big one because it seems like a no brainer to make a Star Wars RPG like that.

Freedom Fighters 2, a successor to Rainbow Six: Vegas 1-2 (I want more Terrorist Hunt), Brothers in Arms... basically any type of squad tactical shooter.

I wish we had gotten some type of sequel to The Warriors because that game is awesome and I love how it plays, as a 3D beat em up that really works.

One random one for me is Renegade Ops, which I think is a fantastic game that I would love to see be made bigger.

Some actually worthy sequel to Fight Night Round 3.

@marcsman said:

Dark Cloud 3

I love the central mechanics and idea of those games and it would be awesome to see more.

@archer88 said:

Dragon's Dogma 2 - Considering the DD Online isn't available in the west, which means a VPN and third party patches to get it working, I don't count it. Maybe my favourite game of the past few years.

This one sucks because I think that game has some amazing parts and could really use a refinement. It could be incredible.

@ezekiel said:

I want a sequel to Max Payne 3. Not because of story reasons. Max Payne has been through enough and it would probably be better to do a spiritual successor. No, the reason I want a sequel is because I find the game much more appealing than Rockstar's open world comedies. But I know there will never be another Max Payne. The masses have spoken. 70 million of them.

I would at least like something like it. Give me a hard boiled shooter like that. I have loved how all three games played and I think 3 is a fantastic feeling shooter.

I clicked on this to say Psi-Ops, well done TC.

Advent Rising! If the first wasn't a technical mess, I feel it would've been better received. Fun, creative gameplay with a solid story.

Every time I see this thread pop up, I keep thinking of the same game. Even though they are never going to release this game and even though this game doesn't need a sequel. But, I'll go ahead and say it.

  • Sleeping Dogs 2
  • Remember me 2
  • Condemn criminal origins 3
  • Manhunt 3
  • Prey 2 the real sequel
  • LA Noire 2
  • F.E.A.R. 4 as long as it's not anything like 2 or 3
  • Crysis 4 same standards as what I said for F.E.A.R.
  • Silent Hill shattered memories 2 with a new protagonist but similar on the psychological aspects.
  • Max Payne 4 that takes place between the second and third game kinda of like those flash backs in the third game timeline.

I'll go ahead and third Freedom Fighters 2. The first game was surprisingly good and I thought the squad combat worked really well for its time. People told me to check out Kane & Lynch because it was basically a spiritual sequel to Freedom Fighters, but I did not find that to be true. Freedom Fighters had a completely different atmosphere, and I only remember one level where you actually commanded other guys around.

One I haven't seen mentioned is Legacy of Kain. The last game in the series, Defiance, wrapped a lot of things up, but there was still an opportunity for more in that world. I've seen the leaked footage of a canned sequel from a few years ago, and there was that multiplayer-only game called Nosgoth, but I'd really like to see a new game in the series. Of course, a big part of what made that series was the voice acting, and most of the games were Amy Henning productions. She's moved on to bigger things.

Yes, yes! Name another game where monsters from a dimension of imaginary numbers attack and turn people into salt? And can only be fought by robot Mary Magdalene and Space Jesus In Disguise? Who are both party members? Because Gnosticism. Or something. Episode I was peak batshit sci-fi anime crazy and I want more.

Also, paging @zombiepie. No Final Fantasy plot's got anything on Xenosaga. I want to see you play the first 5 or 6 hours of Episode I. But you have to livestream it and have a camera on your face the whole time. I want to see a human's head literally explode once in my life.

Actually...FFXIII-3 came strangely close, as I was watching the ending and had an epiphany and question were they trying to make FFXS, and did it also fail to succeed just like all before them.

Also only 6 hours? he will barely meet all the characters!

Yeah, it's a shame the Ninja Theory DmC game was dismissed by so many people just because of the redesign of the main character. If they had played maybe 10 minutes of the game, it was obvious he wasn't the "emo" Dante everybody was afraid of. In fact, this game has some of the best character development I've ever seen. Dante is like a whole new person by the end, his personality and outlook being shaped as the game progresses by everything going on around him, as well as from other characters. Also, the combat system was phenomenal. I don't think I've ever had as much fun with a combat system from beginning the end like in this game. It was just so smooth.

It's a damn shame this game will almost definitely never get anything that even resembles a sequel.

I know it is complete insanity, but I have always wanted a sequel to Twilight Princess. I definitely think it is possible in the story. At the end of TP, Midna says "see you later" (while smashing the mirror between worlds, but they could just whip up another connection if need be), and Zant's death was kind of ambiguous. It was implied that the worlds of twilight and light are heavily intertwined, and the world of twilight is more of a prison. Clearly people like Zant weren't happy with the way things were.

I dream of a game where Zant regains political power in the Twilight realm, and works to conquer the world of light of his own volition (instead of a puppet of ganondorf). He gains a popular uprising among his people, and they turn against Midna. Zant was a pretty awesome villain before he went crazy at the end of TP. I ascribe that to Ganondorf's control. I want a game where Zant stays the cold and calculating villain. I want a game where he slowly marches the twilight across the world of light, instead of the light slowly pushing against the twilight.

  • No One Lives Forever 3. I fear that both of these games might feel a bit clunky these days (still have copies of both, so might check 'em out during this year) but I still loved them back in the day and would be happy about a sequel.
  • Outcast 2. First Outcast was the first proper "open-world" game I played and kinda blew me away. I played it again last year and it was still fairly impressive. Apparently there's going to be a remastering of some sort coming out in March this year, so I guess that's something at least.
  • Syndicate 2. I was one of the five fans of the Starbreeze reboot and would definitely be on board for a sequel...though I'd also be up for any type of new first-person game from Starbreeze, as at the moment I'm just worried that their VR-project will end up flopping and causing them to go defunct.

Just a load of sequels for some old platformers/action-adventures...just not Knack 2.

Chrono Trigger/Cross sequel.

There was a rumor many, many years ago of a third game in series called Chrono Break, but nothing ever came of it.

Apparently Square Enix would rather continue to make endless Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest sequels instead of making one for the best game they ever made. Like, seriously, FF is at 15 with a ton of spin offs and DQ will soon be at 11, also with a bunch of spin offs, and Chrono has had 2 games.

KotOR III, ideally as developed by Obsidian. The Old Republic pretty soundly killed that idea.

I'll echo the calls for Alpha Protocol 2, too. The occasionally-discussed 'Archer Protocol' would be an adequate substitute.

Oh, and another Obsidian-developed Fallout - whether New Vegas 2, New Orleans, or whatever else - would be absolutely fantastic.

@tyrrael: You hit the nail on the head. I can see why people looked at that game and thought that Dante was going to be a shitty character they gave him an arc and made him interesting.

1 and 3 are still my favourite games in the series but there are so many things that I think DmC does better than any of them. I know that a lot of Devil May Cry fans will think I'm crazy but I'd take "new" Dante over "old" Dante any day of the week. In my opinion, what made it so successful is the way that they managed to keep the spirit of what made the original games great but took it in a new refreshing direction.

I feel like anything I have to say has already been covered here. NOLF3, Freedom Fighters 2, Republic Commando 2, Advent Rising 2, and yes, I'd even like to see another Rainbow Six Vegas, but with that, I'll add another G.R.A.W. I'd also like to see Vin Diesel actually get together with Starbreeze or whoever and do another Riddick game. Butcher Bay is one of my favorite first person games, as well as one of, if not the best example of a film license brought to games (as the game is way, way better than the movies). That's not all, but that'll do.

Such a wonderful battle-system wasted on a grey mess of a world without any coherent plotline. A sequel that fixes all that would be fantastic.

I just remembered that Dungeon Keeper 2 had a trailer for Dungeon Keeper 3 on the disc. That game was never made. I guess the Overlord games sorta made good on the idea though.

NOLF definitly needs a new game. Truly amazing games. And XIII was a cool aesthetic.

Glad to see a lot of people yearn for the JRPG style of yesteryear. Most of my desires come out of that space. Another Chrono game or Xenogears (or saga) related game probably tops my list though.

However:

Startopia. My GOD, how I loved that game back in the day, in spite of the entertainment deck bordering on useless half of the time. I remember seeing some comment or another from a former dev not long ago on a follow up, or something along those lines; but it was such a vague sort of sentence that I didn't bothering treating it as anything worth becoming excited over.

Man, the Chrono Trigger sequel they did make sounded like the result of a monkey paw wish, although I'm rather bitter at the whole "haha, fuck the previous game's protagonists" twist.

As for a never-to-be sequel I want, I'd have to go with Anachronox 2.

Brütal Legend. It's a personal favorite--definitely not perfect, but the tone, world, atmosphere, and characters were all really well done. The RTS combat needs work, but with the rise of the MOBA genre, I think if they took some inspiration there, the game would work a lot better. I need more metal-inspired video games!

I would %100 buy a Brutal Legend 2! No one else in the world would and I would want it to be %100 single player (tried MP and really didn't care for it) but I loved that game, faults and all.

I would kill for a DmC 2. There is an unbelievable amount of negativity towards that game and I think those people are crazy. I'm a HUGE Devil May Cry fan, I even liked 2 at the time even though I only played it once when it was released.

DmC was fantastic, I would play the shit out of a sequel. One of the few games I've played back to back. To back. (literally, played that game three times in a row, which I have never done otherwise.)

My submission is:

Oddworld: Strangers Wrath

Oh man, the litany of abandoned games... Of the ones where I'm fairly certain they will never happen, here are the ones I pain for the most, in no particular order:

  • Mega Man ZX 3 - Mega Man ZX Advent's secret ending had the benevolent god-king of the post-human/reploid-distinction society decide that everything was going to hell, and that it all needed to "be reset". This could easily have been used to weld the ZX timeline to the Legends timeline, creating a mostly unbroken continuity. But, along with Legends 3 it will never happen now. RIP Mega Man.
  • Metroid Dread - Jesus Christ, I just realized that they haven't released a good Metroid game in 10 years nor an okay one in 7... Metroid Dread would have addressed the whole "Samus is now a fugitive of the Federation" thing from the end of Fusion. Of course, I have no idea how that would actually resolve, so I can see why they might've canned it. Still, I'd even take a remake of Metroid 2.
  • Castlevania: Dawn of Doomed Desires - On a very related note to the last item, I really really like the GBA/DS Castlevanias (and SotN). At least in this case, I can take solace in the fact that unlike Inafune and Mega Man, Igarashi is still very much in the picture, and still very interested to making more games like this. The Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is dope, so I can live without another Castlevania.
  • FEZ - Was Phil Fish ever working on Fez 2? Did he actually cancel it, or did it never exist? Or, did he only fake cancel it, and we'll find it a few years from now buried inside another game? Either way, I've resigned myself to never seeing it.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics A3 - I suppose this is technically not 100% dead, since the company that created the other games is still in the business of making video games, but Square-Enix has shown no desire to continue on this franchise. This is a shame, as FFTA2 was probably the game I put the most time into on the DS (I liked FFTA2 more than FFT. Yes, I'll go there). But who knows, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised?

Final Fantasy X.

For anyone that doesn't know, every numbered sequel in that franchise is not actually a sequel, really. They all have their own thing going, even the gameplay. That's why you have FFX-2 and FFXIII-3 and all that nonsense. FFX-2 was not actually a sequel in the sense that the gameplay is completely different.

I want more FFX gameplay. Every single thing needs to be in there, like Overdrives.

  • A legitimate sequel to Black and White would be awesome too. They dropped the ball with 2, but I'd love to see what they could do with today's tech to make a heartfelt follow up. I loved B&W 1 so much.

@zevvion: Final Fantasy X's combat was great indeed. I liked how you were in full control of it at all times. You always knew how the battle order would change depending on what attacks you do, and the attack animations seemed to flow better and be snappier than previous ATB Final Fantasies.
