I initially wrote this off as a Nuclear Throne rip off but after this quicklook I'm way into it. Looks full of cool, original ideas. Might pick it up after Dark Souls 3.
The same way Jeff mentioned last night on UPF that he's really bummed out how a lot of high profile games coming out are MOBA's these days, I'm super bummed that a lot of really neat looking indie titles are roguelikes.
Yeah, it's really sad to see less and less handcrafted indie game levels. Indies used to be the one place you could consistently find similar world/level layouts to the 16bit era which was awesome, but now they're mostly filled with lifeless procedural stuff. I like me some good roguelikes (nuclear throne is great and I think for its gameplay style it honestly works better as a roguelike), but the notion of an indie roguelike has just completely lost its luster. I'd much prefer something in the vein of zelda/metroid/castlevania.
I dont get the all the Doom... and gloom? Just because some douchey devs added silly devil horns and played a lot of halo doesn't mean the game won't be fun.
But will it still be Doom? Franchises need to evolve and all that, but when you're just copying stuff from Halo and to some degree COD, it doesn't really feel like Doom anymore. Especially having loadouts is disappointing to me.
It feels and looks a lot like Quake 3 Arena. Whether thats more like original Doom or more like modern shooters I don't know.
The game probably has the potential to be a good game, just not a good Doom game. There's only so much you can change before it misses the spirit of the original. At that point it's just matter of how you feel about the original. Remember when the GB guys made fun of the internet freaking out over Halo 4's iron sights and they made a point to defend it? Yeah, the shoe is literally on the other foot now. Only difference now is they actually feel strongly about how Doom used to be. I suspect the GB crew and others with an affinity for the older games will not like this game, while people with less of a history with the series will find something to like. Or maybe not, maybe the game will just be plain bad. Reboots are hard.
I really enjoyed hearing @austin_walker talk enthusiastically about dark souls lore and its deeper meanings. I'd love to hear more Souls discussion like that, maybe even a dark souls 3 spoilercast down the road?
Also, it was great finally having some of my hopeful suspicions about the game confirmed. I'm beyond excited now!
