@sethmode: Have you tried anything outside of the typical fantasy setting? I have read a lot of Sanderson, Tolkien, R. Jordan which is primarily set in its own fantasy world. But I recently tried something else. Have you read anything by Peter Clines? If not, I wholeheartedly suggest you try out the book 14. I gave the audio book a shot and after the hook about 1-2hrs in I could not put the book down.
The less you know about the book and setting, the bigger the impact. So don't check out too many reviews. If you don't like it just refund it and get your credit back. I'm just saying that it's still fiction, but a lot more toned down. I'm not sure how much more to give away, but if you appreciate lovecraftian lore, then this will tickle nicely.
