GOTY 2022

No Caption Provided

Wow, here we are again. It's been a heck of a year, up and downs, strikes and gutters. We are here nonetheless at the end of 2022. Yet another year has passed us by. This year I was able to do more gaming than I did in 2021. It's been a lot calmer for me and I had the time to play more games than I initially thought. I sat down to do my list for the year and there are more games for that list than I realized. But first, as always, let's go through the games I played during the year that were not released in the calendar year.

Games Played in 2022 that were not 2022 games....

Death Stranding - This was on Game Pass and I was curious. After delivering the first package I was done with the game. Too much of a Metal Gear game drunk and on acid of a vibe for me. Just couldn't get into it so I walked away rather quickly never to look back.

Battlefield 3 - This was just kind of a palette cleanser after spending the better of a month playing only Horizon Forbidden West. I played the game years and years ago on PS3 and it was pretty much what I remembered.

Fall Guys - I hadn't played in a while but I had heard at one point there was a major update. Since I hadn't played in so long, I had no idea what was new and what wasn't. This is a fun game to hop into for a few rounds but the lather rinse repeat style of it just doesn't bring me back. There is just something missing, in my mind, that the game needs to make me stay interested in it. However, for the life of me I can't tell you what it is that would make me stick with this game longer. Likely I will return to it time time to time but that's about it.

Marvel's Avengers - When this game hit Game Pass I said to myself "I have to know". Now I know and I would have been just as well off not knowing. The plot, for the few hours I played, was the most interesting part. The game play itself was by far the least interesting part. Don't plan on ever returning to this game.

Deathloop - I really don't have anything bad to say about this game but I also don't have anything good to say about it. It controlled fine. It looked fine. I think my issue of it is that it based on you playing the same section over and over but trying to do different things. It's a fine game, maybe you should play it???

That's it for the non-2022 games. Read below for the actual 2022 games of 2022 that I played. Remember, we go worst to first cause sometimes its better on the bottom.

  • Let me start out with this statement - DON'T PLAY THIS GAME. The plot is uninteresting at best. The controls and game play are garbage. I didn't see the movie so I don't know how of it it ties in and frankly I don't care. DON'T PLAY THIS GAME. The worst part about me saying all of this is that I got all the achievements for the game. Let me tell you, the most simple sounding one was the worst one to get. You simply have to not kill any enemies in any stage. Sounds easy, right? I'd say go try it but what I really want to say is DON'T PLAY THIS GAME.

  • I've played very little of past GRID games and this game didn't do anything to make me change that stance moving forward. It was OK but the controls felt a little loose and sloppy. The plot was there but I couldn't tell you anything about it.

  • This was such a big 2022 release... that I forgot about until about 2 weeks after it released. I lost a bit of interest, most of it in fact, when they announced the PVE portion would not launch with the initial release. Makes me fear that they will cut that content. I jumped back into this after a long hiatus and thought "Wow, this is as fun as the original Overwatch!". After a dozen or so games I was thinking "Wow... this is just like the original Overwatch.". After that moment I lost interest in this game just as I lost interest in the original. Not saying anything bad about the game but there's not enough there to keep me hooked.

  • As much as I truly loved Horizon Zero Dawn I could not convince myself to have the same love of this game. The environments are truly beautiful and just pop to life on the PS5. On the down side of that, the environment is also very cluttered and distracting. I didn't realize that this was a problem for me until Jessica O'Brien(AKA Voidburger) did a hot take on the game and stated something very similar. Also, the plot kind of goes off in what felt like a bizarre direction. Not sure this series will have the legs for another sequel but the sales numbers will decide that and not me. Honestly thought that this game would be contending for the #1 spot, funny how things can change.

  • This game is one of those games that are low pressure but I can just sit there and play it for hours. There is something about the game that I find relaxing. One of the things I enjoyed about it is that you can see the results of your work and know what kind of job you did. This is a satisfaction I do not have in my real life job. Lover this game, you should play it if you haven't already.

  • This game is as good if not better that the 2018 original. It's so good that it is breaking my rule of not putting it in the top half of my yearly list if I haven't finished it. As the time of typing this, I am over 25 hours in to it and still going. It's so good that it makes me wish Sony would get out of the exclusives business so that more people on more platforms could experience this game. You should play this... if you have a PlayStation.

  • A game I can spend mindless hours playing and loving. If you read the earlier portions of this post, you'll note that most repetitive games don't hold my interest. This game is a huge exception. I bought it on Steam in Early Access and played it a ton. It came to PC Game Pass and I started all over and played more hours. Then it came to Xbox Game Pass and I just keep playing. This game also technically breaks my rule of having to finish a game but I'm not sure this game has an end. Even after all the hours I've put into it I'm still unlocking things and I'm not sure there will be an end to this game as the developers are still working on patches and content for it. If there is any game from 2022 that you should play, it is this game.
