Games of the year 2014

This is my personal GOTY 2014 list. Will update every now and then. Obviously when the year ends, the list will be final.

I also rank the games in category 1 to 5.

category 5: masterpiece

category 4: awesome game that sucked me right in

category 3: a good game where I had loads of fun with

category 2: not bad at all, definitely worth playing

category 1: neh, kinda waste of time

List items

  • Category 4: Beautiful game, with great tactical gameplay and a very interesting story. You get dropped right in and things start to make more sense along the way. Very deep combat, which was easy to learn.

  • Category 4: Very tense game, in which they nailed the art from the first movie! Every corridor of the space station looks interesting and threatening. The last part of the game is a bit more linear and can frustrate quite a bit, but overall this was one hell of an experience!

  • Category 3: Killing thousands of demons, grabbing more loot then you can carry, will this ever get old? Excellent game with alot of extra stuff since the original.

  • Category 3: We all knew this was a great game, the HD remaster was even better. The story is great, but I think the gameplay is what makes this really a good game. I just wish it was a little bit more open sometimes.

  • Category 3: Pure survival horror! What a ride, too bad the gameplay sometimes was not that much fun as other times. Still a great experience, especially for the fans of RE4.

  • Category 3: Feast to the eye, great action, but the mechanics are repetitive and simple. The story doesn't do much then to frame the action. But it sure looks nice!

  • Category 2: It was fun for a very short time. The artificial dragging out of the little content is disgusting. The shooting feels good, but it's a gameplay copy from Halo. Nothing you do in this game seems to matter.

  • Category 3: A surprisingly fun game, thanks to the multiplayer component of other people silently invading your world. Too bad the missions often end up in a shooting fest, whether you want it or not.

  • Category 2: A bit too much coin for the content you get. The gameplay is very cool though and the lighting in this game is near lifelike. This made me very hungry for MGS5: The Phantom Pain!

  • Category 2: The world looks and feels awesome, the story is cool and by your choices feel pretty personal. If only the item management and combat was of the same quality. But it falls flat on the core gameplay. Still an impressive game in scope and graphics!

  • Category 2: Lights out and headphones on; Outlast scared me good. The camera mechanic is clever, but the game lasts just long enough before it get's a bit boring.

  • Category 2: Looks great, feels great, but is missing a lot of expected features. The fact that the multiplayer part of the game (which is essentially the whole game) is broken since release, makes this game a big disappointment.

  • Category 1: Gorgeous game, platforming and puzzles are great, but.. those goddamn quick time events and the fact that the game transforms into a bad Gears of War clone halfway makes this not a fun one for me. A shame.
