@superkenon: At least they're open to having the conversation. In my experience, my friends' parents would never bother discussing games...not so much out of ignorance as it was not caring.
And that's pretty cool that you can get both perspectives from your folks. I think I'd categorize my mom the same way. I kicked my dad's ass in Madden 2004 with Michael Vick when I was a kid (I was a shitty child, obviously), and he hasn't played anything -- or really discussed games -- since. Not sure if the two events are related.
I really like your last point though. A lot of parents should try to approach it the same way.

@mechahendrix I think I'd agree. It's hard to visualize it when you're not that age, but I couldn't so much as imagine my mom having the twitch skills to play something like, say, Bulletstorm when she can barely hit the D-Pad without having to look down, look up, and then re-adjust her glasses. Have you tried making any efforts to get your dad into accessible games (and I don't necessary mean *shudder* casual stuff)?
