That was so fun!!! Great stream, great combat puzzlin'. The timing of that final BFG shot under the door was so good!
And thanks for fixing the lighting mode =] Don't feel bad for upping the gamma, it's just "Legacy" light mode that is the game-breaking thing, but a little gamma doesn't hurt. Yeah, not the best name for a lighting mode...
A bit of the doom community wishes John was a little more specific about his intended settings for the wad, 'cause the lighting and other aspects have definitely been a point of contention--people had pretty different experiences with the wad, due to various differences in settings. But, we do know he intended the dark parts to be super dark, judging by the original Sigil announcement video, which does include a tiny bit of footage of those super dark outer catwalks of E5M2. And we do know from his tweets that he strongly recommends disabling looking up/down ofc, even though I'm pretty sure he posted some screenshots where he was looking up...
In general, the doom community likes the wad a lot. Most aren't calling it the best wad ever, which makes sense, since it's up against 25 years of crowdsourced quality, but most people liked it quite a lot. A few people despise it, always due to the difficulty, and due to some specific cramped fights, especially the ones toward the end of E5M7 >:)
Ah crud, Brad accidentally chose the worst lighting option, by far. "Doom Legacy" lighting mode is a reference to a late 90s source port of doom that was a pretty good port, but infamous for basically taking all lighting out of the game and making it as evenly-lit as possible. Basically 0 contrast.
For example, in stage 2 of Sigil, you're not supposed to be able to see the red cave walls in the distance, it's supposed to look like you are in a building that is surrounded by a pitch black void. But "Doom Legacy" lighting brightens up all sectors so that there's never really darkness anywhere in the game.
Unfortunately, Sigil's most central aesthetic theme, is...moody claustrophobic darkness <_< <_<
Brad! Definitely switch to pretty much any other lighting mode, a good choice is "Doom Software Renderer" lighting mode. Sigil's use of intense contrast is really rad to see!!
(Better yet, go to Video Options and set Render Mode to "Doom Software Renderer" and forget OpenGL altogether, it's such a blurry mess!)
Ooh I didn't finish Timespinners but the writing in that game is super serious, there's no way they would break the 4th wall in that game. So, just Ben's comedy spin I think.
(The Messenger is indeed very memey though, as some might say.)
"oh, if only there was a monster that could jump twice" as positives. I find those kinds of jokes grating
I didn't get that dialogue in the game, but I'm pretty sure the sarcasm aspect was Ben's spin on the dialogue, and not the actual dialogue. Not 100% sure, but pretty sure.
Some cool facts related to topics in this quick look:
The quest giver that gives quests "Avenge the death of Simon!" and other names like "Rosaly", "Trevor"...a lot of the names are Castlevania characters (or maybe all of them)! You're avenging the death of Castlevania ;)
The "shortcut" item wheel doesn't _have_ to be a "full loadout". It can be a partial override. For me, I'm only using each shortcut to swap weapons, 'cause I usually don't want to swap armor. (To do this, don't hit the "copy" button. You may need to "reset" if you already copied.)
I have laughed to tears at like 5 episodes in a row of this. Each episode is the highlight of my day. Did not expect this to be one of the best TITR serieses!
