Need is a strong word. You don't NEED a stick to play the game. The revamped D-pad on the newer 360 controllers work fine and the PSN controllers' D-pad works ok as well.
MK you can definitely get by without a stick but if its possible to grab one, I say go for it.
Here's a picture of my Mad Catz stick modded with Seimitsu buttons. I can say they definitely provide more resistance than Sanwa. I also have an X Arcade Stick that I modified with Happ buttons & sticks for when I play MAME games on my original X Box. I also just got the TE Edition for MK and am LOVING the stick. Call me a stick snob but it's pretty much the only way I can really enjoy a fighting game is with a stick. I would say if you can find a TE for Mortal Kombat, get it. You can also use it with UMK3 on Xbox live arcade or MK2 on PSN.
But if you honestly see yourself playing more Street Fighter right now get the the Mad Catz stick. You can use it for a handful more games. I would get the MK one now and try and find a cheap Mad Catz online later, they are always having deals on it.
I'm still kind of confused. I upped mine to 1 day shipping this morning (I figured whats an extra $4 when I'm already dropping $140). I got my Reptile code this afternoon but my status still says "Shipping Soon" with an estimate of 4/21. My guess is that I'll probably get it tomorrow regardless of what the tracking status says. Amazon always does this.
Gotta say I'm pretty jealous. I'm also a sucker for a good arcade stick and can't wait for my TE to come in. I thought about just using my Mad Catz stick for the game but would rather have a bat top and concave buttons. Now I'll have a stick for SF and a stick for MK.
I'm an oldschool snob and grew up with arcades. There's no question that I'm gonna get the TE for 360. I just can't play fighting games on a pad as well as I can on a stick. Who needs Kratos in an MK game anyways?
Here's a quick one I just captured. I'm still working on making sure I have the right settings to capture the video properly so the resolution is a little crappy. Either way, enjoy I'll try posting a few more, I'm still learning.
