Best of 2013

I think this has been the hardest list to put together yet. There are a good handful of games that your going to see on a lot of people's lists this year, as well a good deal that I think are going to get looked over. When I stop and think about the enjoyment that I got of titles this year, these were the ones which made 2013 for me. So let's begin.

I'm going to go into more depth with the top 5 Titles on my list then the rest. Consider 6-10 on equal ground, but the take away should be that they are still great titles and are more then worth your time.

List items

  • I've always wanted to get into monster hunter, it was just never meant to be. Then Capcom announced MH3U was coming to the US on the 3DS and Wii U, I knew it was finally time. It's hard to put into exact words what makes Monster Hunter so special. But if you like feeling rewarded for hard effort and careful planning, this is something it'd be a shame if you didn't check out. It's a ton of fun with friends and has a strong community around it. If you own a Nintendo console you can play this on, it's a Must-Buy.

  • Released early this year, DmC: Devil May Cry caught a lot of negative attention for changing the beloved series' main character Dante to a more gritty, cynical punk. What I feel doesn't get brought up enough is that Ninja Theory made a lot of clever innovations to the combat system. Being able to switch weapons and mix together your own combos is done so well in this game. It becomes less about remembering inputs and more about just feeling the combat out. I had a blast, I really liked the style of the old DMC games, but for me this was a welcome change.

  • The charm and attention to game-play Platinum offers, is unparalleled. What The Wonderful 101 is to me is everything that I grew up with watching Saturday morning Television; light on story, but jam packed with fun action sequences and memorable encounters. The action of the combat mixed in with the Gesture based commands, lend them-self to some of the most rewarding experiences I've had.

  • Monaco's biggest strong point is it's simplicity. There's no complicated controls or commands to remember. It doesn't sound too suspenseful but you have to see a heist in action. Monaco will have you and your friends hanging on the edge of your seat trying to get that last piece of loot in time to make a clean getaway.

  • I wasn't quite sure where Mario games were going to go after Galaxy 1&2, but it's good to see Nintendo still knows how to make it new and exciting. The level design is great and while it supports single-player the best it's still fun to play with friends. Finding green stars never seem to be a chore, while the levels themselves are memorable and unique. Great title, can't wait to see where our Italian Plumber friend goes next.

  • The Last of Us is one of those post-apocalyptic games that keeps catching you off guard with it's emotions. The characters in game feel like real people, telling their story of what it would be like after a major outbreak wipes out life as we know it.

  • Looking at paper work sounds like a horrible premise for a game. But the way this game frames it, works so well. You also get a very immersed in it's story where you have to make some of the hardest decisions ever presented.

  • A great story with a fun shooter to tie it all together. It will keep you wanting to find out what happens next. The video game equivalent of a Page-Turner.

  • Wasn't really watching out for this one. But it's a whole lot of fun. Playing a slew of different heists with nods to famous Hollywood crime movies. You play them how you want and have a blast doing it.

  • Can you handle the ticking of the difficulty getting harder and harder? This is a great mix of different elements; you pick your hero and see how far you can take them getting stronger as much as you can along the way. Just don't take too long.
