Because beer is better when you can't taste the beer part.

I'm with you though, if you have refined your palette enough to like that stuff god bless you but that's not a train I'm at all interested in riding on. Not that all "non-lite" beers are bad but I do just fine with my piss water thank you very much.

If I didn't instantly forget everything about FF 13 upon finishing it I might have something to say here.

That one guy has a baby Chocobo in his afro. That's fun.

I guess the point of this thread is, how many people here have played it, did you stick with it, do you like it, and do you think it is every bit the slow burn that I think that it is?

Let me preface this by saying that this is a lovely game and I can totally see why people are really into it. Alas …

I fell off it after about 20 hours with just too many dead ends to keep track of and no clue how to make meaningful progress anymore. While it is nice that you always have a whole bunch of possible areas to check out, this is only a pseudo-freedom when you are hitting walls in most of them, sometimes in form of a boss you are cleary unable to defeat yet (though I guess some of them are DLC bosses, there is no way to know).

Combined with the overall lack of direction I fell into in a gameplay rhythm of just going where I have not been yet and hoping to find something there. Which is just not fun given how sprawling the map gets and how tough some of the roaming enemies are.

Also, those annoying doors locked with keys (as opposed to ability/equipment based ones). I believe this is one of the cheaper ways to gate progress in Metroidvania titles and this game has a bunch of them. Most of the time you get no clue where the key might be located or what sort of key you are looking for, so either you happen to have accidenly found it already or it's backtracking time (or time to check out an online guide, I guess). In some cases you can simply buy the opening item, but how would I know this? In fact, "How was I supposed to know this?" is pretty much how I would describe my experience with the mid-game progress.

Also, while I think that the map stuff is fine, there are far too few benches and fast travel points. This might be overly cynical, but I believe that this is a deliberate choice designed to pad out the game with lengthy backtracking just to be able to save your progress (if you happen to progress, anyway).

All in all, this game might just not be for me. I simply appear to lack the patience.

This is more or less my take on it. There is a lot I like about the game but it's just a little too open-ended as far as exploring goes. If it just gave a little bit more of a breadcrumb trail I'd be more likely to finish it. Trucking my way all across this huge map trying to find the one crevice I can slip into, getting there and finding out that it's just a dead end with no way to progress without an item its not clear if I have or not, rinse and repeat just sucked out all the joy that I had for the game.

The story is kind of bad but there's a certain perspective you can look at it that makes Lara look like an insane person, hanging by a thread and the only thing that keeps her grounded is raiding them tombs! It's a dumb thing but when the game gives you a shit sandwich it helps if you pretend it's filet mignon.

The gameplay is not as easy to do that with. I still like the puzzles and exploring but I think I would like this game more if it had no combat with humans. It just feels hollow and weightless and the level design of the combat arenas feels a little half baked. They slap new mechanics (like the vine covered walls or mud baths) onto the gameplay loop that instead of feeling new and different just feel like they ran out of ideas and had to shoehorn something new in there at the last minute.

With that said the game is gorgeous though I'm really not a fan of Lara's new character design, she just looks strange to me in a way I can't put my finger on. Overall I'm liking the game but too many things are keeping it from being great for me. I hope to finish it eventually but it's been slow going so far.

I don't know, call me cynical but “for select third party content” seems like the kind of corporate speak that says "sure, we'll do crossplay but only for the games we will directly benefit from" which means Fortnite, PUBG, COD, etc. Select few of the heavy hitters.

Which is good don't get me wrong but I'm not going to sit here and rejoice that Sony is doing this out of "good for the future of games" standpoint. This was inevitable to a certain degree they were pushed into this and though it's good some movement is going in the right direction I don't take this to mean that this issue is resolved. Something tells me this isn't as simple as just allowing it to happen (maybe some backdoor business is happening) but that's me going Super Saiyan cynical. SSC if you will.

@dudeglove: I'm not attacking you for having an opinion. I'm attacking your assumption that everyone who liked the movie only did because they were what, tricked into it? This is silly.

But if you want to say something silly and get defensive when challenged on it that's cool. Godspeed.

@dudeglove: The only thing worse than hype culture is the people that claim that because other people like something you didn't means they were victims of it.

You can just simply not like something, it's ok.

I really loved it the movie has stuck with me in a way I wasn't expecting.

Waypoint had a great breakdown of the movie that echoes my sentiments pretty well. It's on their new Waypoints sub podcast thing. The visual and audio direction is just incredible and strikes such a unique tone that was mesmerizing throughout. I don't think it's perfect, it's a bit long for my liking but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Maybe try not taking words so literally. I never took "it's not for everyone" to mean that there is something out there that is for everyone and this isn't one of those. The common use says, in my opinion, this thing will be appealing only to a broad set of people. For the opposite of this well, it's anything that is popular in the mainstream and widely recognized as great or special etc.

If you pay enough attention to pop culture I think it's obvious what the big ones are but I don't know maybe someone can offer you one you haven't considered before... Wii Sports? I don't know.
