I love this format, tons of actually good game discussion. Honestly the actual awards/top 10 are the filler part.

To be clear, I don't care who wins in these debates, and I never have. The horsetrading and back and forth for who gets what slot during top 10 are one the least fun parts of GOTYs. What I care about is having interesting discussions, whether that's for an actual award or just a fun category to frame those discussions around.

To give an example, probably one of my favorite clips from 2015 was Austin bringing up Anno 2205 for Best Clicker (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WldlcwA1ziA). The category was kind of whatever (I don't really play clickers ever) but Austin vehemently (if jokingly) arguing for Anno's inclusion was one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

And now we don't really have categories like that anymore. Nor do we get dark horse contenders that show up out of nowhere, because everything has already been hashed out beforehand.

@feckless:im glad they think its worth it

I do too. these games clearly aren't filler or else they wouldn't be talking about them.

That's not at all what I said, but if you haven't been able to figure that out from the dozen other comments that echo the same sentiment, it can't be helped.

Not only is Death Stranding not on the list, but she put Kojima on blast. I think all the ice around my windows just melted from all the HEAT.

Keeping this format is an... interesting choice? I agree that it gives games better attention that otherwise might get overlooked, and makes the discussions less confrontational right off the bat. But considering the marathon last year's recordings were, and the fact they've only got a week this time... well, I just don't think it's worth it.

And real talk, it makes the whole series really top heavy in terms of getting through a bunch of what feels like filler to get to the actual awards.

100% agree with all the criticisms about Disco Elysium. The dialogue trees suck. Don't mark branches as completed until all sub-branches are. Other games have done it for years. It's not that difficult.

The dice rolls just aren't... fun? Or maybe they would be if they had bothered to write different texts or outcomes for how badly you fail or pass them. But having to constantly fiddle with gear every time you do something is just stupid.

Idk. For all the people raving about how you can do anything in that game, I find my options are severely constrained by the writers' limited imagination.

Really proud of the progress you've made here, Ben. You're really close, so don't despair! A couple things:

Try to jump more. A lot of those attacks you're having trouble with can safely avoided by jumping on his head (even the ones you think can't) OR jumping backwards. You've got a ton of room to work with, so use that space.

Dodging is also very effective especially for his spear form. Even parried successfully, a lot of his big attacks will put you into blockstun or knock you back, so it isn't always the best option. Keep moving forward and stay on that ass!

While I completely understand the need to minimize the amount of time away from family, etc. for the east crew, I can't help feeling disappointed with this approach. Surely, a better alternative exists than to pre-record Q&A episodes for both podcasts? It just doesn't seem a good use of anyone's time, especially when the after show exists.

Oh my god that SkateBIRD game is genius. How has that idea and that name not been snatched up and turned into a microtransactions-fueled phone game already?

@poobumbutt: It's probably the most satisfying final boss in a FROM game to figure out and master, but getting there can be a right pain especially if you haven't been going out of your way to get those health and damage upgrades. And just the fact that they turned Genichiro from one of the most memorable bosses into an annoying speed bump you have to get through every time you die really sucks the fun out.

@roytheone: omg good idea. Yeah certain items it’s fine, like the Mist Raven Feathers would make you invincible if you could do it constantly. But the axe should be free, and everything else should have varying cooldowns essentially. I never really used any prosthetic tools because I would instantly stress out about them depleting my limited Spirit Emblems.

Yup. Same. I also never bothered with any specials that use emblems for this reason. I don't care how good they are, or even if they are cost effective. If I have to consume resources to use them, it feels like I'm cheating.

This reminds me of how much I would like an up to date and pretty-looking Rise of Nations - that game was so much fun online and at LANs.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Though I dug up that game a little a while ago and it has aged remarkably well.
