@mrfluke: "Abby's searing hatred for the female body once again prevents her from enjoying a great game. It's nice to be against objectifying people but Christ."
That was a few comments ahead of yours. I am also pretty certain there was a worse one posted early on, but it has since been deleted. Such comments are insulting and dismissive. They are not constructive criticism.
I am not accusing you, or people in general who disagree with her, of making these kinds of statements - but they are being made, and you are, frankly, ignoring them. You cannot have a discussion on how the community reacts to staffers' opinions, without acknowledging that there are shitty people saying and doing shitty things.
One of the reasons, and this is an assumption on my part but I feel pretty confidant in it, that Abby does not go hard into discussions on these topics is that she knows it just kicks the shit into the fan. If she makes a bad argument, it gets a great deal of hostility. If she makes a good argument, it gets a little less, but still a great deal of hostility. Better to just not make the argument at all - and still get a little bit of hostility, just for bringing it up.
The idea that you have to unconditionally love every single aspect of a videogame in order to list as one of the all time greats is silly.
Agreed completely. I don't want to go all "the problem with society these days" here, but the problem with society these days is how people are unable to take criticism of (or even disagreement with ) a thing they like.
Witcher can have problematic issues with depictions of women, and still be great. You can talk about those problems, and still think its great. Admitting it had faults, or even just admitting that others might find legitimate faults that you disagree with, does not mean it is bad.
By one metric (the 150 banana buy outs), they are 1/3 of the way to finishing the game. This puts them on track for about 9 episodes. This seems fine. By another metric (golden bananas) they are 11/201 of the way, on track for 55 episodes. This does not seem fine.
Everyone (including the audience) should abandon the idea that this is a full playthrough, and instead treat it as a short video series where they do something dumb with a bad game for a little while before bailing. This kind of crazy nonsense can maintain itself for twentyish hours over a couple months, but actual sincere DK64 can not be comfortably stretched for hundreds of hours over more than a year.
Glad to see Jeff back, time to get this website back on track with the shit that matters.
Serious note, though - cats can fuck up a baby. My dad had a beautiful Persian, worth quite a bit of money and a long time companion, that he got rid of the day it scratched me as a baby. Apparently it was less than half an inch from my eye - I could have had lifelong damage if it had been that little bit higher.
Keep a close eye on the cats, and be prepared to make the hard choice.
