2020 is almost over and I think the only 2020 release I played was the C&C remaster.

Also, pretty much all tracker music crushes 90s PC midi into the dirt. Of course, modern midi is another thing entirely.

Then of course there are a few more recent tracker formats that incorporate stuff like VST support and internal synthesizer engines too, like BeroTracker's and Renoise's formats, though I'm not aware of any games using those for music.

Avorion is on sale for like $10 on steam right now (or humble store full price) and seems awesome. has very positive reviews, ship building and even a few active multiplayer server. I was on a server with 21 out of 100 people around midnight on a monday.

Aside from Avorion, my favorite space trucking game in the last 10 years or so has been Evochron Legacy, released in 2016 and sequel to Evochron Mercenary which got some amazing Dave, Drew and Vinny content many years ago. Also has both single player and multiplayer with a similar amount of players online. DRM-free and made by one guy, and I think it's incredible.

That intro cutscene was fun, at first glance it was just like the intros for Privateer and Frontier: Elite II, but then it turns out it's actually the Talespin intro.

Kinda telling that neither of them had played Privateer because this is pretty much note for note Privateer in everything from the visual designs, cutscenes and the space cultists. Both the cockpit and space station designs were pretty much identical to what you'd see in Privateer, some of the ship designs were pretty similar too, and of course the landing/take-off cutscenes and the camera angles on the stations/planets were pretty much identical too. Not that it doesn't look fun, but I wish they would bring something novel to the table other than "We made 95% of Privateer, and Firefly's space western stuff was cool too, so that's the other 5%".

I'll probably pick it up once it comes to GOG in a year or two anyway, since I enjoy space sims, but even then, I don't agree with Will on that "nobody is doing stuff like this anymore" - the Privateer/Elite style space sims never died, they're literally the only kind of space sims we've gotten since 2001's I-War 2, and there have been a lot of them, at least one a year including X4 as recently as last year. What I really miss is the properly campaign oriented stuff like Wing Commander, I-War and Freespace. Wing Commander's branching paths and storytelling in particular.

The ship painter was pretty rad though, they didn't notice, but the UV map was actually updated with the decals they applied - which also means that you - instead of putting logos in your decal folder, could put textures in there and map the ship in 3D the same way you apply textures, so no need to edit that image in an external program.

I have zero interest in any kind of card game, but this game has some concepts I hope are getting stolen by developers doing games in other genres. Their way of handling NPC relationships/reputation seems pretty cool, also like the mutually exclusive missions and the way they seem to be doing the day/night cycle with daily summaries, which reminds me a bit of how you had to sleep to level up in older RPGs.

While the individual sprites are well animated I don't think the art style comes together at all, such a mess of different resolutions, and yeah, that junk sound isn't very pleasant to listen to either.

The Pre-Sequel was fucking great. I'm sick of people talking shit. The gravity and Oxygen mechanics were great, the ground pound was a fantastic combat addition. Fuckin fight me.

I really liked the pre-sequel. The freedom of movement completely changed the series and I am kind of sad that (at least judging by this unfinished) that there is no jet pack or ant-grav boots or something. Sailing through the air was great. Also, the oxygen stuff was a non issue after about 30 mins of play, and served as another item that you could get cool stats on.

I agree, these days I prefer it over Borderlands 1. Strongly disliked Borderlands 2 though. And yeah, this footage looks a lot like 2.

On the Retroarch thing, a lot of Genesis, C64, PS1, NES and SNES ROMs are already for sale on Steam through publishers like Piko Interactive, Retroism, 1C, Protovision among others. Having a unified emulator option may help with keeping the emulators up to date, which has been a problem with Bethesda's releases for example still running on a DosBox version from 2004.
