Goty 2014

2014 was weird. I hope VA-11 HALL-A and Secret Ponchos pop up on this list before the end of the year, but I'm not holdin' my breath for either. Other than that, 2014 was another year filled with meaningless Platinums (4, maybe 5 with DA:I) and throwbacks (Yakuza 3 and 4 are both games that are worth playing), so I can't really complain. It would've been cool if some of the bigger games were, y'know, better, but I'm not all that mad because I was fortunate enough to avoid them. There's always next year, right?

Oreshika, Persona 5, Persona 4: DAN, SRW: Z3-2, and IA/VT Colorful are just some of the games that I'm looking forward to in the future, but knowing my luck, two or three of those games will probably be disappointing. That's not the greatest attitude to have, but with how things have been going in recent years, it only adds to the highs and lows that I experience during gameplay. The hype is real!

List items

  • Technical issues aside, Dragon Age: Inquisition is everything I wanted after the less-than-stellar Dragon Age II. If Bioware can keep up this quality writing, I'll be happy to see the next installment in a couple of years.

    Please don't rush things!

  • It's a fresh change from the Z2 games, but with enough work, it's easy to make anyone a God(dess) of Death. Custom BGM and hype scenarios set the stage for the final part of the Z-Series. I really hope Z3-2 ends the Z-Series on a good note!

  • The story is crazy and the black bars are funky, but I enjoyed the time I put into this spiritual successor to RE4. With a bigger budget, the next game out of the studio can be amazing.

  • I'm not really a fan of Monster Hunter-esque games, but the added mobility from the Thorn was enough to make me stick around with the game. Game has its share of issues (Cliffhangers ahoy!), but it's a fun online experience.

  • 2k did some nice things with 2k15, but they turned everyone into Ray Allen/Steph Curry because close-outs on shots don't seem to do a damn thing. I appreciate the ability to edit a player's age, though. Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant will be forever young!

  • I don't know what we did to deserve a Drakengard game in 2014, but I'd like to thank whoever made it a reality. The game isn't pretty and the gameplay isn't the greatest, but the story and its characters were interesting enough to keep me going. I wouldn't mind a book/novel that expanded on the plot, but that's never going to happen.

  • A solid JRPG that uses its art to overcome the technical limitations of the PS3. I'm not sure if I'm gonna dive into the next game anytime soon, but this was an experience that I don't regret.

  • I've got nothing but love for Roguelikes, so I can appreciate Isaac's brand of craziness and dual-shooter goodness. If I'm in the mood for a run or two, I can flip on my Vita have a grand ol' time.

  • A simple, yet very addicting game that gives me something to mess around with while I wait for other things. The awesome soundtrack doesn't hurt, either.

  • Didn't put too much time into this one, but it's already more worthwhile than Conception II. It helps that it's a fun game that I got on PS+.
