Started playing Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine

First of all, the only experience I've had in an MMO is by playing Maple Story for a while and the free trial of World of Warcraft therefore I don't know too much about the genre.  I also have never written a blog before, or have I written something like an impression before so I hope this is not too horrible.  I also have 666 posts, which is awesome.

I was pretty bored earlier today and I thought about playing Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine.  I did just that and while I downloaded a whole bunch of stuff just to begin playing it, I read Aeria Games' short Beginner's Guide on their website.

After a while, I could finally start playing.  The first thing you do when you begin playing is choose to create your character and in which server that character will be.  There's only one right now, Cerberus, so that's the one I chose.  I began creating my character and unlike most RPGs, you don't choose any of your skills in the beginning.  Everything you choose during customization seems to be purely for the look of your character.  For every clothing option , there are only two variations on that type of clothing.  For example, there are only two type of shoes: work shoes and sneakers, but those two types have two different colors.  The same goes for the tops and the bottoms, except each of those have three variations.  The 3 weapons (Machete, Attack Knife and Battle Hammer) also seem to have no significant difference between them except for the look.  The COMP is the Pip-Boy looking device on the character's left arm which can also be a halo-shaped device (the one I finally chose after all of this).  I did not find any change when I was swiching "Models", though.

After you're done with the character creation, there's an opening scene that is way confusing.  There's basically a lady named something like Kuroe who is giving you a mission.  You are a Demon Buster and you are there with her to investigate the location of "Home II".  There I realised and I was disspaointed that there is no voice acting in the game, even though the rest of the scene was pretty well made.  Upon reaching an area close to Home II you receive your first mission: to investigate a nearby elevator.

You are now able to control your character.  I was overwhelmed by the amount of menus and I spent too much time going through most of them.  There are no hotkeys to actually access those menus so it's pretty frustrating having to always click at the lower-right corner of the screen to access something as simple as your inventory.  And /dance does not work, sadly.

Great minds think alike?
Great minds think alike?

You find the elevator, find out that it's busted, report back to Kuroe and you are given a mission to take the east exit of the area to get to Home II.  After reaching Home II, you find out the place has been attacked by demons and you begin what's basically a battle tutorial against Slimes.  To fight, you target your enemy and afterwards you either left click three times or you press the attack hotkey three times to hit the enemy.  You also use other options for battling such as using magic skills like the fire-based Agi or defensive skills like Counter or Guard.

After you go through all of this, there's another cutscene followed by a title sequence that also reveals a lot about the story which is basically about a post-apocalyptic Japan caused by a teleportation device accident that made demons appear.

You end up going in a Virtual Battle room in Home III, where you go through a whole bunch of tutorials and are given items after each part is done.  Here you learn all, if not most, of what you'll be doing in combat.  You assign your attribute points points each time you level up to any of the 6 attributes: vitality, strength, intelleigence, luck, speed and magic.  The way you earn skills reminds me of Oblivion.  It's called the Expertise system: you choose which aspects of combat you want to allow skill points to be allocated to, and they automatically increase depending on how you fight.  There are 16 Technical expertise which include: Destruction Magic, Counter, Summon, Talk and Threaten and you will get stronger skills associated with that expertise over time depending on the ones you focus on.  There are also 22 Knowledge expertise.  These will only grant passive skills, if any, but will develope certain aspects of your character and these include Occultism, Magic Control, Psychology and Gun Knowledge.  But not all of these expertise will advance depending on what you do; only those that you allow to advance will be able to and the others won't advance at all.  You don't want to allow all 38 of the expertises to advance because there's only a limited amount of points that can be attributed to all of the expertises and if you focus on all of them, none of them will make you powerful.  Chain expertise is another part of all this where if you develope a certain one enough, that will open up another expertise called a "chain expertise".  There are 9 of these.

This pic was not taken in the Virtual Battle room, mind you
This pic was not taken in the Virtual Battle room, mind you

After these tutorials you are basically set free into the world to explore.  The first mission that you get afterwards is to get a wing from a Leader Pixie, and to do that you must obtain her as an ally demon via demon negotiation.  This is a system that has been in the SMT games and in Persona 1 and Persona 2, I believe.  You approach a demon and you must either threaten, taunt or talk to the demon so that you can acquire it.  I have not done much of this during the short time I have experienced with the game, but it is an important aspect of the game.  The demons that become your ally basically help you in battle.  You can fuse up to three acquired demons together to obtain different demons.

All in all, this game seems pretty interesting and I'll probably play it frequently for a while.  There are definitely some problems that will make it frustrating (you run slow and you can't jump), but I think that you should at least try it for a short while.  It's free to play, by the way.

Welp, Imagine sucks. Played the Japanese open beta with some FAQs and other english players (we joined an english-only guild) about three years ago and everyone quit after a week of solid playing. Then again earlier this year (?) when they did the US version BETA (I haven't gone back since then).

Verdict: I just don't like Korean MMOs, Drift City is the only one I've spent any amount of time in.

I seem to like it so far. Its definitely one of the most interesting MMO's that I have played and its also free so I'm not really complaining all that much. There is some grinding in it but it isn't as annoying as say World of Warcraft.

I played a small amount of this a while back, it's a shame because with some tweaking of the interface and streamlining of the controls I could see myself enjoying this. But at the moment it's way too much of a chore just to play.

I'm not allowed to play the game anymore...I made a Persona with some random people for the promise that I would help them make one.  Well, I lucky got a really nice Persona and technically bailed...people got angry.  >.>

@KaosAngel:  Persona ninja! :-D

This game looks interesting to me but I am wary of any free MMO due to the weakness of the UIs in most of them.  I used a highly modified UI when playing WoW and don't think I'd enjoy an MMO that I couldn't customize.  Also, everyone looking alike it not my thing, but on the same token, I won't pay real cash for clothing items in any online game.  I don't know.  Champions Online is coming out next month.  Chances are I'll go with that one and play it for a bit.  And, yes I know I'll have to suffer for a while with their standard UI.  But, I've never played an MMO that was just being freshly released, so I am eager to see how that newness to even the basics will feel, unlike the freshness of each new WoW expansion which was heavily chronicled in the PTRs and most quest answers wound up on Wowhead even before the expansions went live.

Thanks for the insight into Imagine, FluxWaveZ.  It was useful for me.

@PenguinDust: Dude, I got a really nice Persona off the fusion...they wanted me to give that up for someone's fusion.  I said no way.  Never see so many capital letters in a span of 10 minutes in my life.

I'm pretty sure there should be a new Endurance Run called "Just Like This" for Imagine.

Jeff downloaded this today. I downloaded it about a week back but didn't start playing because of exams, then exams where over and EVE was on sale for $5 so I've yet to start Imagine.

Gave this a try once. Didn't like it - the UI is horrible, and everything about it just felt clunky to me. When I was online it seemed like most people were just sitting around chatting instead of actually playing the game... can't say I blame them.

Well, I played for most of the day today and the "fresh scent" of the game is gone, the "new car smell" if you will.  The demon negotiation system is way more tedious then I thought it would be (you have to constantly run after a demon, hoping that either the Taunt, Threat or Greet emotion leads to something good and you repetitively do it on a demon, praying that it doesn't get mad and attack you).

I do very much enjoy the fact that you are basically controlling two characters: your demon and yourself, managing both in battle at the same time.  Your demon gains levels and skills like your character, except the demon's skills appear at certain levels instead of the Expertise thing.  Apparently, you gain mounts at level 20 and I think those are separate from your companion demons, I don't know if I'll make it to there, though (I'm level 8 or so).

Something else I really do like right now is that there are no penalties for death when your level is lower than 10.  When you die you can either choose to revive at the spot you died with 25 HP or revive in town with all of your HP.  I really like this because I'm not too used to battling and controlling 2 characters at once and because of this I have no fear of dying.

It seems like the game often (and I mean often)   has double or triple EXP gained events.  Both yesterday and today stuff like that was going on and when one event ended, there was another one for something like a double Expertise Points gained event.  There was even a photo contest going on today so the game does feel like there's stuff going on.

I'll keep on playing for a bit until I can't take it anymore.  Somehow I ended up in a clan and I wanted to leave shortly after I joined but I found out that being a part of a clan gives you several bonuses; stuff like 5% mana points boost, so I decided to stick with it.

Only been playing for a few hours, but it seems okay. I'm not a huge fan of MMORPG's and tend to stick with single player games. I like how much Shin Megami Tensei feel it has. It feels very much like SMT: Digital Devil Saga, the way it looks, the premise of the game and the skills like Zan (force) instead of Garu (wind) like in the Persona games. The combat also seems more interesting than most MMO games with quite a lot of different combos and skills to use. I'm not sure how it will go in the long run, I usually only play an MMORPG for a couple of weeks before I get bored, but at least it has the recognizability of being a SMT game with Jack Frost, Pixie and the other demons I know from DDS and Persona.

I'm still in the "new car scent" phase so I can't say anything for sure, but so far it at least seems better than most of the F2P Asian MMORPG's out there. However I admit much of it is the SMT license, it has a lot of "hey I know this and that from this and that SMT game that I love" moments. I'm much more interested in the Shin Megami Tensei universe than Warcraft, Warhammer or D&D after all.

@dagas: Yeah, much of my interest in the game came from my love of Persona and my interest in the Shin Megami Tensei series in general.  There are some pretty neat concepts in the MMO that sets it apart from others such as the Demon fusing, negotiation and the whole Pokemon-esque mechanic associated with it.  But I've stopped playing a while ago.  I played a whole bunch; sometimes playing as much as 8 straight hours, but I guess MMORPGs just are not my thing.  The "freshness" of it soon wore off for me and all it came to was grinding to level up.

I love the fact that you're basically controlling 2 characters at once in a battle in this game, but it's so repetitive and it eventually becomes a chore.  I've always figured the fun in games like these is had when you are a high level and can do a whole bunch of crazy stuff.  I don't have the patience to reach that so I've just given up.  I had tried it again last week, played for 15 minutes, realized why I had stopped and just closed the game.  I really feel like going back to gain some levels but in the end, I find it to be boring and repetitive.

Hopefully you'll be able to have more fun with it than I did.

The battling and leveling up system was fun and seems deep on the outside, but the one thing that turned me off about this game was how slow your character walked.

Even if this was the best game ever, I'm not sitting around and watching my character walk -10mph.

It's neat, but I'd rather see them work on a higher budget paid one, cause the idea could work well if it were better implemented.

@honey_power: Oh, I hear ya.  It was a godsend whenever I got one of those "special" speed boost pills (or the ones you would need to use real money for usually) because the normal ones made practically no difference in movement speed and the character was so damn slow.

@Pazy: I could see that being way more fun than going solo, like I did.

"@Pazy: I could see that being way more fun than going solo, like I did. "

I tried to play it solo in between when my friends played but its boring as can be so Im level 25 and they are mostly around level 50 now :| Also my whole play style/character makeup etc. is geared towards group play so now that im being "forced" (its the next story quest that unlocks the next set of "stuff") to do a solo test (3 diffrent combat zones with diffrent enemies incresing in diffulty) so im having real difficulty with it and its boring me to hell since im alone while I do it.

The movement speed is a problem for me as well but only really when im going between places. When I go to play with friends they are usually on the otherside of the world (near their chosen dungeon) and they have to wait for half an hour for me to run to them. Once were done they do their home spells to go back to where they want to be but my home is in the earlier parts of the game where my quests are so I have to run from the dungeon to town while they wait for me.
