I really question what the show is trying to make the audience feel about Goku. He's a goofball, he's a bad husband, he's AFK for long stretches, he's a badass when the situation calls for it. Then he quits, throws his son into the fire, keeps the plan close to his chest. Reacts befuddled when challenged on his mystery plan and expects people to have faith in him.
What the show wants to me to like about him is far and few between.
Goku is 100% a man of mystery, but that mystery is 100% about his fanbase.
I will say this explains the dark horse love of Vegeta and Piccolo.
