Game of the Year 2023

Another year is almost gone. It's fine though I don't feel any older. Nope nope nope. Where was I? Oh right video games! Not the greatest year for the devs with layoffs across the board, but the games themselves were amazing and plentiful. Here's some of the ones I enjoyed the most which I actually got around to playing.

Good stuff from not this year:

  • Streets of Rage 2X: An amazing fan game which blends SOR2, SOR3, and even some of the gameplay elements of SOR4. The mode where you can play as bosses is the icing on the cake.
  • Halo Master Chief Collection: I clocked in over 500 hours on my steam timer this year. The campaigns are great gaming comfort food.
  • Cannon Dancer – Osman: This insane Strider-like finally got a console release through arcade archives.
  • Mystic Defender: Same as above except this one is a Sunset Riders like :)

Probably good or great, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet:

  • Dead Space (2023)
  • Hi-Fi Rush
  • The Last Case of Benedict Fox
  • System Shock
  • Baldur's Gate 3
  • Marble It Up! Ultra
  • Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
  • Lies of P
  • Final Fantasy 16
  • Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged
  • RoboCop: Rogue City
  • Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon

List items

  • The best 2D Mario has been since world. Great new ideas and stylish execution. Now if only you could play as Yoshi/Nabbit without the easy mode stuff :/

  • (Remastered). This game is as amazing as ever and Retro did some magic with the Switch hardware and the Tropical Freeze engine on this one.

  • Make no mistake the writing, characters, and music are the stars of the show here, but the cutting edge graphics are also a plus.

  • The Yakuza like story mode and new modern controls help bring this game to the masses like no Street Fighter before. The core gameplay and overall product seem better / more polished than SFV as well.

  • This beat-em-up was a pleasant surprise. It brings solid gameplay, a soundtrack with well remixed classics, and modern pixel graphics and mixes them with light roguelike elements.

  • Super Mario RPG didn't NEED a remake, but I'm glad we got one. Everything you like is here only more pretty and/or slightly improved. Five star level up dance.

  • I didn't know I wanted a doom/duke game based on a fake webpage, but someone did and the world is better for it.

  • Making major changes to one of the best games of all time is a dangerous undertaking. Capcom has done it without ruining the source though. Is it better? Hard to say. Maybe not? Is it damn good? Yes.

  • This is another great RPG remake. Unlike Mario RPG this one brings some more complex gameplay/systems tuning on top of the 2DHD graphics and I'm all for it.

  • I have mixed feelings about Diablo IV. I loved playing through the campaign and liked the protagonists. I didn't like the story as a whole though and the post game and level scaling stuff aren't great. Still good enough to slip in here though.
