Game of the Year 2019

2019 was another banger for games though I didn't get to play nearly as many as I would have liked. With that said this list is 10 that I'm quite happy with.

Additional shout outs to:

  • Blazblue Cross Tag Battle. Props to BBTAG for its excellent continued support. There were lots of great new characters this year.
  • Contra and Castlevania anniversary collections. It's good to see Konami doing something with their properties even if it's just making collections of classic games.
  • Tales of Vesperia: Definitive edition. "you know what actually yeah that one"
  • Collection of Mana. Sure it's been fan translated forever, but it's nice to see an official English release of Seiken Densetsu 3 after... 24 years? Geeze.

List items

  • I jumped on the kickstarter for Bloodstained hard back in 2015 and I'm happy with the results. IGA and his team continue to positively refine the Castlevania formula pioneered in Symphony of the Night and enhanced throughout the GBA and DS titles.

  • I would have missed this one if not for the Giant Bomb videos. I'm glad I didn't. TABS's set it and forget it troops are wildly overstated in their actions which creates a fun blend of strategy and stupidity.

  • A puzzley platformer with excellent style, great writing, and the right length to not overstay its welcome.

  • Welcome back Devil May Cry it's good to see you. Maybe a little less subhuman next time?

  • An excellent follow up to Team Ladybug's last metroidvania Shin Megami Tensei Synchronicity Prologue. The gameplay uses its Touhou trappings in effective ways with time stop and graze mechanics.

  • A stupid fighting game in the best way. I get the same feeling from it as Dong Dong Never Die or to a lesser extent Sailor Moon and TMNT Tournament fighters.

  • The side scrolling beat'em up genre was one of my favorite as a child so it's always nice to see a well implemented modern take.

  • My favorite Zelda game gets remade with some beautiful aesthetics. I wish the frame rate was more consistent but I'll take what I can get.

  • Why aren't these vending machines real?

  • (World of Warcraft Classic) Sure WoW, feel free to take a few more years of my life. I wasn't using them anyway.
