Your Steam name: HaroldoNVU

Your location: Brazil, usually free during European "prime time".

Which Bracket you like to participate in: Low level

Number of wins: 11 + dozens of bot matched

Favorite role and favorite hero (if any): Support. I can Jungle as Enchantress and solo the hard lane as Windrunner. I can play as most support heroes if given a day or two to train but right now I favor Crystal Maiden, Enchantress, Tidehunter, Witch Doctor, Lich and Sven. If needed I can also play as Initiator with Centaur, Tidehunter, Batrider and Tiny but I'm not great with mid-laners and carries (unless they're junglers). I mean, that's what I do better given my skill level.

If you would be willing to be Team captain(few extra responsibilities, mainly setting up games/cancelling/communicating): Yes, but I'd prefer joining a team with someone more experient. I'm not a great English speaker but I understand just fine and can follow commands.

EDIT: already on a team.

I found this particular playlist of videos very helpful when I started as it covers most of the basics. Purge's Welcome to Dota, You Suck might be the most popular one but I think it's a bit too long winded, lacks a bit more visuals and covers some stuff I don't think beginners should even be concerned about like animation cancelling. Purge's guide is excelent, in my opinion, to go back to every 10 or so matches and re-read so you'll have more context to capture some of the more advanced tips there.

Question about the Dota 2 community (away from the GB community on there). How is it? I played both League of Legends and Heroes of Newearth a while back with a friend and found the communities of both games to be rude, obnoxious and so very unwelcoming, it's what made me not care to ever touch a moba game again. Steam/Valve seem to have implemented some neat features to help highlight good players and I'm sure there's some bad eggs in Dota 2 like any other gaming communities but I'd be interested to know what it's like in general.

Right now I'm playing against bots but discovered that the co-op against bots mode which seems like the next step. Been using mainly Ogre Magi (because Nolan North of course) and Sniper (because he's range and that suits my awfulness at this game. Guess I need to start experimenting.

I also started recently but I played about 25 public matches, a third of that on the South American server and the rest either on US East, US West and Eu West. I can tell you the community is ok, but you'll run into those types every now and then. At least a first as you'll be placed in the lowest brackets you'll be matched with a lot of people like you (us, really), people trying to learn. There's always some annoying self appointed expert but I just mute them and report if needed. Go ahead and try some publich matches againts bots.

I'm looking for Dota 2 cards. I have an extra Riki to trade for Tusk, Tidehunter, Phantom Lancer, Tiny.

Still looking to trade, @stonepawfox? @extreme_popcorn?

Has that ever been one? If so, how was it? If not then why not? I'm just a newbie and I can't really see the downside now, if there is one, but I think it could be something fun to do some time in the near future with all the influx of new GB duders playing Dota 2.

So lately I got into a couple of public matches in which my team quickly surrendered, like 10 deaths behind and between the 15-20 minute mark, as soon as the enemy team made it to our 3rd tier tower the other guys just wouldn't leave the fountain. This wasn't about regrouping, they were just throwing the towel. I found this particularly annoying as I've been to matches where we managed to come back from similar situations or at least recovered a bit and lose with some dignity. I can enjoy and learn from matches in which I'm losing but I guess it must be pretty frustrating for some people. Is there some widely accepted protocol here? should I just join them in the fountain and let the game be over?

Your opinions are delicious.

I don't know but I kind of agree that the most likely case is that the OP just grew old. I remember when online play in consoles was becoming a thing and I was fascinated by it until I started running into assholes all around. I play a lot of co-op games with friends and we always use voice chat. Except for the sometimes annoying noise level it's great. We have fun, we talk tactics, we share discoveries, talk about vydjagames. I have little patience for the wild west that is the online game community though.

@hungry's analysis is pretty spot on, at least for my country, Brazil. I even played my last 8 or 9 matches on the South American servers and it takes longer to find a match and the player base is full of quitters. I call bullshit in the whole segregation racism argument. It's not racist that you can to play a team based game with someone you can communicate and I think valve should add more language options to filter. Guess what? In those matches I played on SA servers we had English and Italian speakers and so far the most obnoxious player I found so far on a SA server was an English speaker. I guess people pick all options because all they really want is get a match soon. Nothing wrong with that and I don't think anyone here is actually suggesting region locking, just that some servers enforce language filters. I mean, I can't post in my native language here. Is Giant Bomb a racist xenophobe holocaust denier pedophile website?

Also I'd like to defuse a common misconception regarding Brazilian players actually knowing English but refusing to do so. I see this a lot in every "OMG teh BR" thread. That might be the case some times but it's not the norm. The average Brazilian gamer understand about as much English as the average anime fan understands Japanese. They know a handful of words but can't form sentences or truly understand most of what you write. Some do know a little English but are self conscious and afraid of being taunted for that.
