2016 Gameplay

This is quite obviously the list of games I'm playing in 2016.

List items

  • I watched all of the videos where the GBEAST team played through this game. (I discovered that these videos even existed through r/Giantbomb.) After watching the first video, I was convinced I wasn't going to buy the game or play it myself. At that point, I was completely content watching the guys play through the game.

But the more I watched of that game, the more I wanted to play it myself. And it couldn't hurt to purchase the game and help out DONTNOD, right? I'm happy to support them if that means they make more awesome games.

So, I totally caved and bought the Limited Edition PlayStation 4 version. Mostly because I fell in love with the soundtrack.

Anyway, I think Alex said it best (and I'm paraphrasing): this game deals with serious issues but it does so in a meaningful way. I was surprised by the game at almost every turn (even if I could predict the dialogue in places) -- especially at how emotional it was. I found this game to be absolutely lovely and completely unexpected.

  • I've been eagerly awaiting Firewatch since I first heard about it. I'm a fan of Olly Moss (meeting him at Comic Con two years ago only endeared me to him even more) and his art style. And as I've mentioned before, I *love* adventure games.

Also, I have a burning desire to know what Firewatch is, exactly. (Maybe I should get that checked out.)

My first impressions are generally good ones. The beautiful scenery and the witty dialogue have me thinking about Firewatch even when I'm not actively playing it.

That's not to say there aren't issues with the game. I'm playing on PS4 and this version is known to have some problems related to frame rates. It's definitely impacting my playthrough. My play time is limited to 45 minutes to an hour per sitting. I get terrible motion sickness from games that force the first person point of view. So the point of view plus the frame rate issues mean I get sick very quickly.
