Dragons Dogma and why you should really play it (Now on PC!)

No Caption Provided

Jan 15, 2016 EDIT: This is my old blog but considering the game is now available on PC it's as relevant as ever. Go buy it, buy a copy for your friends, buy one for your mother, heck buy one for Pompidou!

One of the most underrated titles I have seen in a long time, and arguably one of the best RPG experiences of this generation - Dragons Dogma is a game that everyone should play. In my opinion it is a perfect blend of Skyrim and Dark Souls rolled into an action packed hybrid. The combat has weight to it like Dark Souls, but not as animation priority heavy which I thought made DS sluggish past a certain point. From the Skyrim side, it has a pretty large world to explore with unique locations and various quests, but I think it’s the exact opposite of what Patrick claimed - unlike Skyrim, the world of Dragons Dogma is filled with loot chests that reward exploration with worthwhile treasure. How many times did you explore a cave in Skyrim only to find a chest with 14 gold in it or the same exact sword with a pathetically weak elemental buff on it? Dragons Dogma has no generic loot. Every piece of equipment is unique. You won’t find 12 different versions of the same sword with different stats. Almost every single time I strayed from my quest to explore a nook or a side path I was rewarded with a chest that had something interesting in it. For the first time in ages I was fully engaged in exploring the world and not using any sort of fast travel.

Reasons why you should play Dragons Dogma:

Versatile class system

No Caption Provided

Dragons Dogma has a very unique vocation (class) system. You earn regular levels that increase your stats like health, stamina, attack defense etc..but you also take on a role, or vocation, that ranks up independently and unlocks new skills and attacks for that particular vocation. You can switch vocations as often as you like - it is even encouraged as class specific passive buffs carry over. For instance, in the warrior vocation you can unlock a passive buff which greatly increases your strength, which will still be available for you to use when you switch over to the Assassin vocation. This allows for great versatility when creating your character and encourages experimentation within the many classes available.

No Caption Provided

You are presented with a plethora of vocations to choose from, each specializing in distinctly unique forms of combat. There are three primary classes: fighter, strider and mage, which offshoot into hybrids and specializations. Fighters are your typical melee class with shield and sword, but you can also become a powerful Warrior or the magic wielding Mystic Knight - both of which use completely different weapons and attacks. Do you want to engage in melee combat, getting in up close and personal? The Fighter is an agile class that has numerous sword skills like dynamic home-in lunges, shield bashing or concentrated strikes. Feel like you want more power? The Warrior wields gigantic two handed weapons that send small enemies literally flying into the air and can stagger even larger foes. Want cool armor and melee combat but also a bit of magic? The Mystic Knight makes use of a magic shield and runes that both offer unique buffs and enchantments to you and your party as well as provide offensive magical attacks. Mage, Sorcerer, Assassin, Ranger, Strider, Magick Archer.. there is literally a vocation for every playstyle and you’re not locked into one for the entire game which is great in case you want to try something else down the road.

Engaging combat

Hang on tight
Hang on tight

The combat is simply amazing. Much like Dark Souls or Skyrim it relies on stamina but unlike either of those games it is fast paced and engaging. The skills you unlock are grandiose in animation and fun to execute. Melee classes have varied forms of lunges, spins, and focused attacks that let you dominate the battlefield. Mages possess spectacular offensive spells, one of my favorites being a literal meteor shower that rains down over the battlefield decimating anything standing in your path - double so impressive when two or more mages cast it simultaneously. When fighting human sized opponents there is great feedback for all your attacks. When a foe is armored or blocking, your weapon will bounce off with a loud clank leaving you open for attack. When your blade makes contact with flesh the opponent will stagger and enter stunlock as you rain down hit after hit on their hapless soon to be corpses. Slashing away at a helpless bandit never gets old.

No Caption Provided

The real fun begins when you face larger enemies. If you thought fighting giants or even dragons was “epic” in Skyrim then just wait till you face those very same foes in Dragons Dogma. There is a very interesting grappling mechanic in place highly reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus. While not always necessary to fell larger beast, it is advantageous to climb up and over them in order to get into position allowing you to strike at their weak spots for massive damage - like a cyclops eye for example. It is both exhilarating and plain fun to grab onto a raging manticore, trying to crawl up to it’s weak points as it thrashes about trying to shake you loose. In addition all of these creatures have different attack patterns and states. A cyclops can become enraged, swinging their giant club wildly about and will fall over stunned if you shoot at their feet or eyeball. Likewise a drake will circle you from above unless you shoot their wings to bring them crashing down. Just remember to not make the rookie mistake of clinging onto one of these flying beasts too long - unless you have enough stamina to cling on and force them to land, you'll fall a really long way down.

The companions

Playing Dragons Dogma you will never be alone. Joining you on this journey will be your very own Pawn, a special companion shaped and named as you see fit. You will get to choose their vocation and outfit them with equipment. They will learn alongside you and even offer hints along the way. In addition to your own companion, you can hire 2 more player created pawns from a special area called the Rift which allows you to browse player created pawns by level, Gamertag, vocation and so forth. Just like your own pawn, these are companions from other players games’ complete with their own equipment and behavior patterns. As you can hire out other pawns so can others hire out yours, a process through which they gain invaluable knowledge about quests and enemies you haven’t faced yet. You might employ the service of some pawns that completed quests that you haven’t which will prompt them to offer helpful advice along the way such as telling you which way to go when reaching a fork in the road, or giving you helpful hints when exploring dungeons.

The Rift
The Rift

The most exciting part is that these AI companions are not incredibly stupid. In fact I dare to say they are the most helpful computer controlled players I have ever encountered in a videogame. Support mages will buff your weapons with appropriate enemy debilitating magic and heal you in the middle of combat. Melee characters will draw aggro and hold down adversaries for you to deliver the final deadly blow. Sorcerers will rain down destructive spells that can bring down even the mightiest beasts in mere seconds. The pawns will also shout out enemy weaknesses, gather loot that you’ve missed, give you directions, or even bring fallen allies for you to revive. I was never frustrated or angry with my pawns and in fact owe them my life and a great many victories. Unlike other games, the brunt of the combat won’t always rest solely on your shoulders with these AI companions running around. Quite often I’d be busy trying to scale some large beast to hack at their weak point, when my mages would annihilate them with spells before I had a chance to even get in position. The entire pawn system is quite ingenious and something I've never seen anywhere before.

I could go on and on about how great this game is but in truth my reasons for wanting you to play it are rather selfish. I want everyone to get Dragons Dogma and play it because I want them to make another one. Because this game is so incredibly detailed and unique that it’s a crime that no one is talking about it.

As a final tease I’ll just say that while the story is largely enjoyable if not a little straightforward throughout the majority of the game, the final two hours go completely off the rails in this glorious way that only a Japanese developed title could - just when you think you’re done, there is literally two more hours of gameplay that just make your jaw drop.

Dragons Dogma, catch it!

Taken from Google the Dragons Dogma -> Dark Arisen change log:

-When Saurians die after being knocked down, they will now use a special death animation for when they are on the ground.

-Goblin Shamans will appear in the Witchwood.

Pawns

-Adjusted how often pawns will talk by spacing out less important lines; in effect, making them seem to talk less.

-Adjusted and balanced the equipment and skills of all of the high-level pawns that are available to a player when they're playing offline.

-Adjusted how much it costs to hire a pawn that is higher-leveled than yourself down to a more realistic scale.

-Added a Monthly ranking to the pawn's Top Ranked section.

NPCs

-You will not gain Affinity with Assalam simply by talking to him anymore.

Items & Equipment

-Adjusted how much Ferrystones cost and how much they sell for. (Purchase price: 20000 >5000 | Sell price: 3500>1250)

-Adjusted how much Premium Rings and Premium Earrings cost. (Purchase price: 1,500,000>150,000 Rift Crystals | Purchase price 3,000,000>300,000 Rift Crystals)

-Tweaked stat increases for weapon upgrades (increases weaker upgrades, decreases ones that were too strong). Tweaks affect 68 different weapons.

-Dramatically increased base stats for 12 weapons obtainable by defeating the Dragon.

-Improved base stats for 10 Magick Bows

World

-A Portcrystal that allows players to return to Cassardis has been added just outside Cassardis's gate

@seppli: I play a Magick Archer so I can deal with most enemies without the need for buffing so that is probably it. The Magick Archer gets Ice, Fire and Electrical attacks so apart from Holy buffs I don't need to depend on enchantments as much.

My go to squad is -> Magick Archer for myself ->Mage pawn with high Anodyne and Halidom, anything else is extra ->Sorcerer pawn with High Offensive spells ->Fighter pawn to take aggro and tank.

I haven't ever tried to roll with a Ranger pawn but I can't see how they'd contribute in any significant way and Warriors look really cool but their attacks are simply too slow. I've literally seen Warriors wind up for an attack and the enemy bandit or whatnot simply walk away before they can bring their weapon down on them.

I played DD when it came out for like maybe 5 hrs, then quit. It was rpg burnout after Skyrim and Reckoning I think.

Picked up Dark Arisen because of the new expansion content, but also because of the improvements in fast travel.

Long story short, I can't stop playing DD now and I haven't even started BBI proper yet. Such a deep and charming game. The pawn system is just pure genius. I have acquired some friends who play and renting, rating, and gifting stuff is like a game unto itself. My arisen is a MA now, but I'm seriously considering going back to ranger(miss my 10 shot flurry). My main is a huge warrior and I always rent two mages or mage/sorcerer. Works quite well.....until you walk into a room in Everfall with 2 Cockatrices, a wight and a bunch of gobs or hell hounds....holy crap. And yep, get a mage that can buff everything because of resistances, but especially holy for the dragons(Ur).

Bottom line: Great Game, and a financial success apparently. I'm really excited to see what Capcom does with DD2 on next gen hardware.

I knew full well Dragon's Dogma is something I'd be into. I don't know how I held off for over a year. I am so glad I finally decided to give it a go. It's been years since a game has captivated me as much, to the point of neglecting other stuff.

I accidentally drank a black coffee at night, rather than my usual tea - and it led to a 48 hours session (with breaks of course, mostly to not fuck up my sleeping pattern). Yesterday I forgot it was my day in the laundry room (I only got it every 2 weeks). I've got plenty of fresh laundry, though next laundry day is going to be a bitch. Hasn't happend since I was enraptured with World of Warcraft at its height. That's how crazy I am about it right now.

Kinda feels like when I picked up the first Gothic from a bargain bin, and fell for it hard despite all it flaws - only Dragon's Dogma plays incredibly well, and manages to have rich character and loot progression without breaking balance whatsoever - at least thus far. That's an incredible feat of masterful gamedesign right there. I'm only lvl 85/200, and even if it eventually breaks - there's always Hard Mode to try out.

Currently like 3 dungeon-layers into Bitterblack Island, and it's really got the Dark Souls vibe down to a tee, just a little more forgiving, and a whole lot better playing. The team's intimate knowledge of Devil May Cry is really shining through. My strider kinda plays exactly like Dante with the double jump and all that (other than being the Ultimate Spider Man that is).

From all the already announced games for E3, Deep Down has gone from *mild interest* to *most anticipated game* of E3 2013. Capcom has got gold on their hands with the Dragon's Dogma template. All it takes is some elegant touches here and there, and then it just has to figure out how to sell it. It deserves Skyrim-levels of success, really.

@humanity Just picked up Dark Arisen today. I am right in thinking that this is the same game but just with some new areas. Kind of like a Game of the Year addition?

Also this pawns thing. Can you buy or use other people's and if so do you have any suggestions on how to go about this? Fancy swapping gamertags (I presume you played this on 360) so I can check out yours?

Really looking forward to giving this a try. If it manages to combine a Bethesdary exploring vibe with the combat of Dark Souls it could be very interesting.

@leebmx: Dark Arisen is the same game only it has some new items/skills, a few enhancements to things, and a new game area not in the original game complete with new monsters and more powerful versions of old ones. You can get other peoples pawns the cost of doing so is in rift tokens which you really don't want to do. Best way to get good pawns is just do a search for what you need when you get to that point. Or if you don't mind potentially OP pawns get some people on your friends list who play. You can recruit the pawn of someone on your friend list at no cost no matter how high level they are.

Just don't go in expecting Dark Souls or Skyrim... there are similarities sure but Dogma really is it's own game with it's own unique style. People who love Dark Souls might not like Dogma, and vice versa. That said played at the highest challenge levels Dogma can be brutally hard at some points, even worse than the Souls games in many ways.

@karkarov: What I really want is a game which gives me a good reason to explore and lots of cool places to discover like Bethesda's games. I love that feeling of being faced with a big open world full of possibilities. Here's hoping.

@leebmx: You use Rift Crystal currency to purchase other peoples Pawns from the Rift (those stones with the swirly pattern). Pawns that are of your level are free, and you only need to spend crystals to purchase higher level pawns. So for instance if you add me and want to get my pawn from the beginning of the game then you can, but she will be sort of expensive and will also kind of break the game as she'll be much more powerful than anything the beginning of the game has to offer - on the flipside she will have a ton of quest knowledge and enemy tactics to offer. For instance if you go on a quest that I had done with her, she will tell you where to go when you get to a fork on the road, or what the enemies weakness is when fighting a monster. It's a really awesome system!

Dark Arisen is the complete Dragons Dogma game, with all the patches and bug fixes that came in the Dark Arisen DLC area all rolled into one. The new area, Bitterblack Isle, is intended for high level characters and has a really cool and dark vibe to it. You should only really visit it after you complete the main story once, and maybe even that may not be enough to fully prepare you for the EVILS that lurk within!

Both yourself and @jackel2072 should brace yourselves though as the combat isn't that similar to Dark Souls. It is somewhat animation priority heavy (what Japanese game isn't am I rite folks!.. *crickets*..) but it is a much more dynamic and active system. The best part is that different classes have different attack animations much like Dark Souls, but also completely different skills based on your Vocation (class). Like both the Strider and the Magick Archer use daggers, but the Magick Archer gets useful magical attacks like an overhead dagger strike that deals fire damage, or plunging the daggers into the ground to create traps that ensnare your enemies - while the Strider doesn't get these skills, he gets different abilities related to them. What is the best is that core skills for a single weapon translate across all classes. So the core dagger skills you learn as a Strider carry over to the Magick Archer and Assassin vocations.

ehh you'll figure it out! Explore, enjoy the awesome combat, and get lost in the sweet reverie that is 3 AI pawns yelling "he's weak to fire!" all at once.

If you want to add me on 360 and check out my sweet pawn Miralda (named in honor of my favorite Demon's Souls NPC Miralda the Executioner) then my GamerTag is supHumanity

@humanity: Not really bothered if the combat isn't that simillar to Dark Souls, just would like some sort of depth and challenge, which Skyrim didn't really provide.

@leebmx: There is plenty to explore, it just isn't as "big" as say Skyrim, and won't seem as open. You will face a lot of backtracking but just remember things change based on weather, time of day, quest, and there is tons and tons of hidden loot/items.

@rorie: I think you are looking for "disgruntled" Rorie. It is annoying sometimes but as you get farther in the game it becomes less of an issue. You pick up archer classes that play almost like shooters, some moves are huge aoe's, some actually home in on enemies so as long as you are "close" they hit. The game is an acquired taste though, everyone seems to either love it or maybe not hate but have a strong dislike. I guess the big gate I think hitting a lot of people at first is that hidden speed stat. As you level up you never really see it because it is gradual but your character does move faster and can sprint for way way longer. That also helps with the lack of lock on quite a bit because you can move faster which makes it harder for enemies to get past you or just juke you and get to your blind side.

It's not a word, unless you were literally grunting out of frustration. While there isn't a lock-on system per~se, you will automatically magnetize towards enemies you're attacking or that are in front of you. Unlike a game like Demons Souls though, you don't need the pinpoint accuracy because you're a lot more mobile. You certainly don't spend half the game with your shield up.

I think it's a somewhat polarizing title. Most people that take a liking to it get really hooked. I experienced this first hand, coming home from work each day and sinking several hours into the adventure until I was forced to sleep by bodily needs. The people that can't get past some of the mechanics never get very far, and thats fine too I guess. Dragons Dogma isn't a very casual game in that it will demand quite a chunk of your time to complete the first time through, not to mention all the side quests and such.

If you do get into it, I think it's an extremely rewarding experience. I'm not one to throw hefty praise left and right, but I believe it is one of the most innovative RPG's of this generation - the weapon skills, class system, pawn, quests, story, it's all very creative and unlike anything else. I mean the story Rorie.. it really goes some places.. like it goes..

You get used to it. You just point in the direction you want to attack and you can change direction at any point between attacks during your combo. After a little while, every battle will feel like a Lord of the Rings movie. When you're running from a Drake, and run directly into a pack of hobgolbins and start stabbing and slashing at them while never really breaking your stride, you'll see how great the combat can be.

given how much ultra close combat you'll be doing, it surprisingly isn't really missed.I normally really want lock-on enough for it to be a dealbreaker if it isn't there but I found myself not missing it at all in DD.

And as others have said some Strider classes have lock on for the ranged attacks.

Give the combat a chance with an open mind. You need to grind a little at the beginning, but after 6-8 hours it really starts to click.

@karkarov: DD:DA is a game, that came in a box, that came out in 2013. GOTY.

I would most certainly not give it to DD vanilla. That game had too many problems, and since DA fixed them all.... GOTG.

Also, only play hard mode. And for a tip, to quick save hit start then back.

DD was my GOTY 2012 and DD:DA may be my GOTY 2013. Well it probably won't be since DOTA 2 officially released this year, but it's in the running!

I can't name 5 games better than it this year. It's good and this year's releases are pretty sparse imo.

I feel like I could really love this game if that makes sense, I like the look of it and the combat feels good. I just feel a bit overwhelmed once the game opens up, I just don't know if I'm doing things right. I can't really remember since the last time I played was when Dark Arisen was a free PS+ game. I think I will try it again this weekend.

I'm going to buy it but I probably won't install it until next month or the end of this month. Comcast put a 300 gb data cap in the South Florida area so I don't want to go too far above it at the end of the month. I remember really liking this game on the PS3 (Dark Arisen. Got it for free on PS Plus) but I just couldn't ignore the frame rate for very long.

Steam says I've played for 2 hours today. It's good! I had to turn off pawn chatter pretty much immediately, though. If I had played this back in 2012, I would have had to put it down pretty quickly. I really don't like excessive NPC chatter.

I don't know if I really like climbing on things, though. I'm playing a person with daggers and a bow, I imagine I'll be taking down most big enemies from a distance. Climbing on things has looked and felt awkward thus far.

I'll think about it. It looks great on PC but I'm trying to cut the backlog down. At least there's a cheap option if my PC doesn't look up to snuff.

Tomorrow... Tomorrow I get to play this in not shit framerate or resolution. The wait is kiiiiilleeeeer.

Still a little bummed about the japanese voices. I don't hate the english ones or anything (they are actually pretty good), it's just gonna be weird to make the transition with so many hours played the other way.

I played the demo and the framerate was terrible, so no. I would play it if it was on PC.

Finally your time has come my friend!

Me and Pompidou have steam family sharing turned on so I don't need to buy him a copy. Though he's constantly playing and I will feel bad if I kick him off so maybe I will anyway so I can actually play. I don't even know who taught him to use a computer... Must have learned it in his dog fighting days.

Anyway, great post duder! I agree with all your points and I'm loving the game.

I mean people have joked around about Dragon's Dogma on PC for a long time, but at least it obviously had a chance of happening. Now Bayonetta is NEVER coming to PC.

NEVER.

For what it's worth, the Wii U versions are fantastic. Maybe next Nintendo gen for you? XD

Downloading it right now. I really enjoyed it when I played it on 360 but I never got around to playing the Dark Arisen content so I'm excited to get into it again. Hoping my laptop can run it okay.

I loved it on the 360 despite the framerate, but this release on the PC seems a little bit too late. Don't feel the need to double dip.

Gees, I have a hard time getting into the flow of this game. Hopefully I will "get it" soon.

I was really hoping Capcom would approve this game for XBone BC.

Still have my fingers crossed that they'll consider it after PC sales have slowed.

Pretty fun a couple hours in, very challenging. Also, fun note, nexus mods opened a section for this game. Cleaner faces!

Yeah I did the opening, created my character, played a bit and I dunno if I care enough yet.

@christoffer: a take away I got from my like 2 hours of playing is to make sure you use your skills, just slashing with the sword did like no damage, but I can basically one shot enemies with that thrust skill.

It's not for everyone. Some people just have objectively bad taste in videogames..

Jokes aside, I do think it is an acquired taste. I can see why some would be turned off by the rather unconventional design choices - the very same unconventional and completely unique things that pulled me right in.Then again some people are more than happy to put 200 hours into Fallout 4 when I couldn't really make it past the first few hours.

Yeah, you know. People are different. If they had released the demo that they released for consoles, I'd recommend anyone play that before they get the game.

My first time playing, and I'm ecstatic to be completely sucked in to a game this much. Once i got to the Capital (GS) the game hit its stride. The combat is incredible, and their is so much you can do. Hanging on to harpies to make short cuts in a step canyon for example is exhilarating. I love expermitning, and DD has been a playground. I love how dynamic everything is especially the quests. You really need to plan, and prepare before you venture out. Night time is actually night time, and it's terrifying. Completely different game. As a Berserk fan I'm fanboying over the references, and inspiration all over the game too.

Gameplay is supreme, and I am loving this 10x more than Witcher 3.

@humanity: Hey now. I don't dislike the game. It's the "oops, couldn't go here yet" or "oops couldn't do this quest yet" that gets me. I'm sure I will play 10 more hours and forget all about that though.

Edit: I'm aware this sounds stupid. But what exactly can't I do? Give me a hint here.
