Best of 2015

Here we go: My top 10 games of 2015! I'll add some runners up starting at #11 as well! I may need to do some rearranging, but this is my list, for the most part.

Still not a great year for console games, but oh well!

List items

  • Anyone who's talked to me knows that Life is Strange had to be my game of the year this year. It became one of my favorite games of all time as well. I like the themes this game explores, and the realized characters that it uses to explore them. The relationship between Max and Chloe was one of the most relatable, believable relationships I have seen in games so far. Blending time-travel, telltale style adventuring, and emotional characters and storylines has yet to be topped for me. I couldn't have asked for a better game experience this year.

  • Like Demon's souls, the last souls game I liked, this game pissed me off. Luckily, it wasn't as difficult and I managed to get through it and feel that sense of accomplishment that Dark Souls nor Dark Souls 2 could give me. The combat felt more fluid, and I just absolutely loved the style. Victorian-style themes and body horror is definitely a unique clash of styles, but it worked! I also really enjoyed trying to piece together the story, even after I had already beaten the game. There are few games that can leave a lot of questions unanswered, but still leave me content and intrigued rather than fed up. Bloodborne is a great, challenging game that is a great experience with cool enemies, combat, and themes, and only suffers from it's lack of weapon variety.

  • (Released on XB1 in 2015) Isaac is a game that I played in long stretches. Almost like Bloodborne, I pushed myself to complete each new milestone the game set for me. Defeating mom, defeating moms heart, defeating the devil, and every other boss was super satisfying and rewarding. Sure, some runs were complete shitshows, but the game more than made up for it by providing the most varied rogue-like experience that I have ever played.

  • It's weird. I really liked this year's Mortal Kombat game. It improved on the stiff combat of MK9, added some cool new characters, and had a similarly awesome story mode as last year's game. However, I think I'm burning out on them. That's not to say it's worse than any other fighing game I played. Hell, it's the only one that made my list this year, and I played the shit out of it for long marathon sessions at a time. I 100% completed the game and I cherish my time spent with it. I just think the next MK game needs to make the combat more dynamic - no more button string combos. Still, this is a great game.

  • This game surpasses the original in every single way. I can't say too many bad things about this game other than some of the dialogue.

  • Call of Duty hit an all time low with Ghosts and Advanced Warfare. The campaigns were awful, and multiplayer was disastrous. Unlike Ghosts, time to kill feels perfect and, unlike advanced warfare, the game is properly paced for the connectivity problems that a P2P game faces. The maps are expertly designed, providing what I believe to be the best map rotation since Call of Duty 4. The weapons are nicely balanced with only a few exceptions. Also, the boost ability is perfectly suited to the game and feels natural. The zombie mode is interesting and, while the campaign suffers from uninteresting characters, it dives into themes of humanity vs. technology in an interesting-enough way. I really like Call of Duty again. Thanks Black Ops 3.

  • I originally did not like this game because of the combat, but I've come around on it and appreciate how much content it brings. Not only that, but the amount of quality content is unmatched. I really like the writing and the world feels like a real place. Great job!

  • I didn't think this game would make my list when I first played it. It is definitely not as good as the first Hotline Miami. The story is a little to convenient at times, and the music isn't as good. The gameplay is hampered by too many guns and big areas. However, it's still better than a lot of other things that came out this year. The music is still awesome, and the gameplay is still addicting. Oh, and the story is actually pretty interesting. Again, it's no Hotline Miami 1, but it's still a good game.

  • This game barely made this list, and it mainly did so by pure fact that it is a star wars game. I like star wars, and this game perfectly captures the feel of star wars. The sounds and visuals were emulated so well, that I can tell a lot of hard work and care was put into this. It's pretty enjoyable, too.

  • This game was weird and cool and I ran out of good games.
