Memorable Games of 2024

List items

  • + Like FF7 Remake, game is filled with additional lore, character backstory and chemistry with rest of the world that gives the whole thing depth and engagement to care more and get invested

+ Battle mechanic further evolves to give the stat and build maniacs something to experiment with

+ Overall presentation (especially music) just hits the mark whether you are a FF7 fan or not

+ Side quests that actually gives story pay-off... even if the tasks within can be dull

+ There are a lot of content and mini-games that mostly hits

    - Pacing can drag due to wealth of content

    - More and more I play, I wished if the game story could've just been a faithful remake of the original rather than the path SQE is taking

Overall, I have enjoyed this game a lot to play over 100 hours in a relatively short amount of days. You can clearly see the influences and inspiration they took onboard for the 2nd game of the 3, and while not all of them are successful, it did the "world traversal" of the RPGs justice.

Now I wonder how they will wrap it up... I feel like they are building it sort of like Endgame moment...

  • + Like RE2 and RE3 remakes, Capcom continues what it takes to set a new bar on the definition of "Remake"

+ Top notch refinement to the mechanics and presentation making it such a joy to play again and again

+ Rather uneven story arcs from the original game has been fleshed out making players invest more on each characters as they appear

+ Remixes of the source material changes things up enough to even give the veterans surprises

  • + Does much better job of bringing all traveler's journey together with grander arc to complete

+ Majority of the character arc stories are very memorable by itself

+ Great pixel art and music gets player's creativity going in visualising what the characters would really look like in real life

+ Turn based battle mechanic that's actually enjoyable with quality of life features that makes grinding feel... less grindy and entertaining

    - Quality or the relevance of some character stories aren't all that even, perhaps this is subjective to who the player is, but I found Agnea's story the least entertaining

  • PS5 Remaster

+ Addition of bonus content (commentary and Rogue-lite mode) does make it worth revisiting

+ Story, characters, and everything that wraps it with is still remarkable and could stand as one of best in the industry after 3 years upon initial release

+ PS5 additions (although subtle) do add up to provide one of the seamless narrative driven action adventure games... ever

+ I personally love the story, and this is what I call AAA performance

  • + Art design choice can be alienating at first, but quickly becomes something that makes it shine

+ Great performances that keeps the engagement vibrant

+ Ways to broadcast and get crowd to join the party play is excellent

+ Overall story arc, while simple, helps players to focus more on character narrative and development cycle to care more

    - Some story branches, which may not necessarily be the "best" route, feels too brief... almost to tell the player that they've made a wrong choice..

  • + Great remake & expansion to a hidden gem from GBA era

+ Level design and the mobility move Mario has is still fun as ever

+ Time trials are so fun where you need to make sure you are familiar with all the moves

    - Art design (especially coming out after Super Mario Wonder) doesn't feel as attractive, perhaps it could've used toon rendering instead...

    - Music is a little too... ambient for my liking

  • + Faster paced real-time combat mechanics aged well

+ Overall setting, design & music does standout in a nicely fleshed out contained world

+ Character interactions and chemistry is very engaging as you get to know not only your party members, but fellow survivors

    - Technical design however hasn't really aged that well even if it was to be checked for when it was first released

    - Overall narrative however... tends to be rather underwhelming and doesn't really stand out even amongst cliche JRPG story tropes

  • CURRENTLY PLAYING

  • + Batman in sandbox in a nutshell

+ Story does eventually come together to provide a "conclusion" to the Arkham trilogy

    - Batman control scheme hasn't aged very well, creating a lot more learning curve than it needs

    - Overall city design doesn't fit what they have tried to do trying to integrate the Batmobile...

  • + Simple, cute, fun to play (although it's a bit on the too easy side)

+ Great range of mini-games (sometimes you could mistake this as a party game!)

+ Toon-renders on the characters personally didn't feel better than the original

    - Way too easy for the majority of the game

  • CURRENTLY PLAYING

  • + Brings the fun of simple mechanics that matches the theme of being a kid in a playground

+ For adults, it gives you a nostalgic feeling of being a kid, where your imaginations and fun was more important

  • ****Metallic Child****

    CURRENTLY PLAYING

  • + Simple yet addictive action dungeon crawler with easy to try character styles

+ Story is simple yet has enough intrigue to makes you want to continue through the grind

+ Level up and loot mechanic while not ground breaking gives you enough carrot on stick to keep playing (like... those type of addiction you'd get playing Diablo)

    - Limited dungeon geometry tile set, where it can get very repetitive very quick

    - Presentation while good and stylised, is a bit too simple

One of my "it's not remarkable, but I got addicted" podcast game of the year so far

  • + Didn't mind the story... as it showed more interesting sides of the knights than it always being focussed on batman and usual villains

+ Game for some reason gave me feeling playing Saints Row the Third... which is both a good and a bad thing? but mostly good

+ There were few small element tweaks that would've made the game so much more enjoyable.. but even without it.. it still got there as the game progressed

    - Can't shake the feeling that the game was perhaps 20~30% sluggish in overall speed.. combat flow, while different, was still entertaining

    - Red Hood's main choice of attack never really gelled

  • + Heartwarming story that plays out wonderfully as you tackle on more puzzles

+ Simple yet fun puzzles that progresses nicely

    - Controls are fine... to an extent, but it could be a lot better.... definitely holds strong "Designed for VR" feel

    - Presentation of the human characters leaves a lot to be desired, perhaps because the game originated as a VR title?

    - Buggy, where some core mechanics would stop working unless you restart

  • + Discrete ways it captures the narrative is memorable, getting players to connect the dots and create that feeling

+ Wonderfully presented in pixel art, isometric style which feels classic and modern at the same time

    - I feel there could've been one or two more years to give a bit more connective journey

  • + Solid baseball game with varying degree of simulation aspects you can apply based on your taste

+ Great presentation that gives you pretty authentic feel of the sports

  • + Visuals

    - Quests (especially the side quests) aren't interesting, and there are a lot of them

    - Story pacing is very slow and doesn't really build up well to get a better payoff

    - Too much text... and misses on localisation.. where it becomes more hinderance to read and digest story, there's so much "telling" rather than "showing"

  • CURRENTLY PLAYING

  • + RPG lite? that feels more like a auto-play mobile RPG that's... somewhat addictive to play as a idle game...

+ Integration of Miis gives players choice further get personal with what is a simple yet entertaining story shell

    - Gameplay hook becomes far too repetitive after the 2nd world, and game goes on a lot longer than it should... making it even more repetitive

  • + Different gameplay styles do give you the variety that keeps things interesting

+ What it does and how it does it is very purposeful to the audience the game "seems" to be intended for (gaming audience perhaps under 8 or 10)

    - Unfortunately even within Nintendo's "game for family" for mantra, this game is way too easy, and content included is very limited

    - For what shows on display, performance is rather lacking, which seems to be the lack of ability on developer than the hardware limitations

While it is a welcome addition to suite of Nintendo universe of games with different characters, the game for the audience outside of its target, it holds little to no value other than the fact that it's a Nintendo game.

  • + Personally love the attempt to put more "authenticity" to short stories were great

+ Sound design and open stages continues to delight

    - Story mode could've used double the amount of scenarios from different perspective

    - Unfortunate buggy mess even after number of years after initial release...

  • + Simple shooting levels that almost reminds you of playing simpler third person shooter back in PS2, PS3 era with a lot prettier coat of paint

+ Good use of star wars license in an attempt to fill in story between Episode 6 to Episode 7... and it was quite satisfying for me

    - Multiplayer wasn't really there by the time I got to play the game.......

  • +Easy and cosy pacing

+Updated mechanics from legacy DS and Wii era does make it better connected experience overall

    - Story has moments, but overall when it's all done, it's not all that memorable

    - While updated visuals creae more cohesive look and feel across both games... it's a very buget feeling effort where we all know system could do a lot better and more

  • + Story ambience is engaging

+ Character interactions with various AI is entertaining

    - Story starts with little to no context (which even if it was deliberate, didn't really work that well for me) which personally would've benefited immensely by doing a set-up piece in first 3~4 minutes

    - At the end of the day.. it's yet another walking simluator

  • + Has touching moments with story that ultimately propells you to play on

+/- Familiar game play mechanics that's not doing anything better than others, but not doing any worse either

    - Personally didn't enjoy the voice acting as it was more distracting than engaging

  • + Piece of life story about the mum and daughter is somewhat cozy and heartwarming

    - There really isn't much "gameplay"

    - Narrative can be very one note, where it's definitely not that fun to play in long session

  • + It does have a cozy charm that gives you serene feeling in the midst of mystery

    + Environment presentation

    - Buggy movement and environment collision detection that ultimately takes you out of experience

  • + Simple stylized presentation is somewhat suitable

    - Mechanics are a little too one note

    - Lack of Oomph in sound design ultimately makes the game rather dull

  • + Simple (although very unremarkable in mechanics) game for kids and parents to play together

+ Presentation seemed very faithful to the source material, which was a big hit with kids

+ Great game to use to entertain very young kids (even if they can't play it)

    - Gaming audience older than say... 5... will find the "game" portion very unremarkable

  • - Wonky controls doesn't really add to increase engagement

    - Story... Characters.... just felt very pointless...
