Games I played in 2020

A list of games I played in 2020.

List items

  • It's got fun combat that's good about giving all the playable characters a unique feel, as well as good worldbuilding in everything from the chatter of NPCs to the main characters characterization. It moves between feeling small and linear in places to grand, if linear, in others. It works, though it definitely skids along a bit on the fact that it's the first game in a bigger story, so it doesn't need to wrap up every thread it starts. That's a clear advantage it has over its predecessor FF15. Even so, it's also the happiest I've come away from playing a Final Fantasy game in ages. While the ending took a bit to digest, having not played the original, I'm very much looking forward to the continuation now.

  • Solid action-rpg game with loads of different attacks to try, but kind of repetitive encounter-wise and it's as easy to get lost in the levels as it was in the first one. Also just not a fan of it's story in general but it also doesn't really get in the way either.

  • A solid follow-up to the first game. The new characters are cool and it makes improvements to the UI such as removing the scoring system alltogether and replacing it with the more intuitive 1-Up Gauge. Less sure how I feel about the changes made to the progression of multiple playthroughs at the moment, will have to see as I play further in.

  • DX version for Switch.

  • 2000. Revisited the PS4 version and tried going for a completionist run. The speed-up function in particular helped eliviate some of the grindier aspects of the game. Story and characters hold up decently, though takes a bit of a dive toward the end of the game as there are less character scenes and more mushy lore that doesn't feel that neccessary.

I loved the different characters' set of skills, even though the game never became very challenging it was fun to put a party together and use the different members. Though dungeons felt short all the different locations and monster designs were fun to see as well.

  • Very smooth to play so long as you're not trying to pick something up or land on a enemy's head, then the game's very demanding precision comes into play along with its often punishing chain reactions that'll kill you quickly. Still fun despite this punishing nature and varied enough to keep me playing to eventually see the later stages, if only through unlocking the shortcuts.

  • Style-wise it feels fairly different from the remake trilogy. In some ways that I'm not enthused about, but not in ways that are actually bad. Gameplay-wise it has brought over all the mechanics of the original in a way that feels great. The physics of the movement is different for sure, but in a way that makes it easier to control. All of your moves get more use, and that's even before getting to the new stuff. Removing the life mechanic while keeping a reason to collect Wumpa (and making this modern style optional) was another good upgrade from the originals.

Other than the graphics creating clutter that made a high speed grinding section hard to read it has been very enjoyable so far.

  • Cool, but too grindy. Really burnt out on it trying to secure a good character roll without continuing the story. Worldbuilding seemed well thought-out but all the characters were very standard molds of anime archetypes so it ended up not being that compelling anyhow.
