Activision Blizzard Job Posting Points to Focus on Optimizing Classic Blizzard Games... Maybe More?

As a stalwart lover of all things Diablo, today is a weird day. It seems like the news coming out of Activision Blizzard as we near Blizzcon 2015, which runs from November 6th through November 7th, has become a deluge. Just yesterday, Austin wrote an article about Activision Blizzard acquiring King, the developers of the devilishly addictive and mind-numbingly successful mobile game, Candy Crush. Also yesterday, a trailer teaser (teaser trailer, whatever) popped up for the upcoming Warcraft movie. As if that wasn’t enough, a smaller but perhaps more exciting bit of information hit concerning the future of Blizzard’s past catalog, namely Diablo II, Warcraft III and Starcraft. Under the Job Openings portion of Blizzard’s website, a posting went up just looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Classic Games. The text for the posting is as follows:

Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.

We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.

Emphasis mine, of course. Among the communities for these games, there is now a pretty intense discussion about what exactly this means. Are the games being optimized for new operating systems, but being kept as close to their original releases as possible? Or, in the alternative, is this the first hint that we may be getting something like HD remakes of these classic Blizzard games? Obviously, it is much too soon to tell. With the most basic interpretation, the text makes it sound like they are looking to make the older games playable on new computers. The more interesting portion, however, comes in the listing of responsibilities, where they state that they are looking for people who, “Own implementation and curation of features new and old.”

I don’t want to get too excited, but hearing about the possibility of new features in these older games is pretty exciting. Of course, new features could be just about anything, and may not be anything that would add to the game in any substantial way, But, with how little is said in this posting, it’s fun to speculate on the possibilities.

So, what do you duders and dudettes think? Do you fondly remember these games? Do you want optimized versions for your Windows 10 PCs or full on HD remakes for PCs and even consoles? Or are we riding this hype train way too early?

Also, is it too soon to start mapping out my Spearazon’s skill tree?

The idea of new content in Diablo 2 is really exciting. They could keep adding stuff to Diablo 2 and I would play it forever. I just don't see how that would work, though, considering they would essentially be competing with themselves if they continuously added new content to Diablo 2 while still putting out expansions for Diablo 3. Maybe they could retcon Diablo 3 and update Diablo 2 to be the new Diablo 3!

In any case, I've never really had a problem running Diablo 2 on any of my machines so I don't know what compatibility issues need fixing. Higher resolution support than 1024x768 would be nice.

I would love it if they actually released HD updates of Diablo 1 and 2. Hell, just adding widescreen support and sharpening up some textures would be cool with me too.

The only issue I can see for Blizzard doing this is the possibility of fragmenting the fanbase of the franchise even more. Diablo 3 has mostly been a complete disaster since launch because of their core design choices. They've done a significant improvement with the game since then but I mostly see it as them putting a bandaid over and over, without truly addressing the problems with the game.

Not to make this comment all about Diablo 3 but every time they issue a major patch and new season, activity spikes for a couple weeks (if they're lucky then months) and then activity drops again until the next patch/season. No one plays the campaign anymore because there's no reason to. Basically what I'm getting at is the campaign for D3 wasn't great and even if they give people a reason to it'll just fragment the player activity. If you're late to a season, good luck finding a public game if you're under level 70. If they bring back the classic Diablos then I can see a majority of core fans still sticking with 3 start abandoning the sinking ship to play 1 & 2.

Overall as exciting as it sounds to play an updated Diablo 1/2 with new features, it would be far more interesting for me if they mixed the best parts of what each Diablo game did for a 4th game.

I would love it if they just patched Diablo 1 and 2 to have native widescreen support.

My guess would be just optimizing it. Full HD remakes for PC and consoles seems like way too much of a pipe dream. Never mind that there was a job listing a while back for new Diablo stuff.

If anything I could see some simple up-ressing and refining, but nothing that I'd really call a "remake."

Still, making those games work more easily is great! Those games are all fantastic, and I'd love to get back into Warcraft III and Diablo II.

Weird. Friend and I were just discussing last week how cool it would be if they did something of an HD update for Diablo 2.

Support for big modern resolutions, updated hi-res textures, higher quality audio etc. Of course it would be amazing if they went in and added new items or something but I don't think they'd go that far.

Getting Blizzard's last good game franchise The Lost Vikings could be interesting.

Optimization and possible rereleases on Steam or a similar storefront would certainly net a lot of sales.

FWIW, if they do much to SCBW I think that while there is still a big audience for that game, they'll continue playing their pirated versions rather than buy the game.

Additionally, if they do anything that would change the gameplay of it, or change the aspect ratio, I think people would avoid it like the plague, aside from the campaigns. If they made it easier to get it in a decent stretched 4:3 aspect ratio at a lower rez on modern monitors, that probably would be appreciated, but stretching it full screen, or making the game actually 16:9 won't go over well with the diehards who have been playing that game forever.

For D2 and W3 though? Go nuts, full HD thing. Actually kinda wish they'd talk about Warcraft 2; I mean you STILL can't buy that game from their online store, and that was the WC game I've ended up enjoying the most.

@sparky_buzzsaw: They've their own store front with Battle.net and I could certainly see them putting it up on there. You can still buy Starcraft, Diablo 2 and WC3 and it's expansion from Blizzard digitally and it gets tied to your battle.net account. I've Diablo 2 and SC with both their expansions that way. They don't show up on the Battle.net game browser though and you have to go to a webpage to download them.

I don't think it needs to be a remake. I'd just be stoked if I could play WarCraft II or StarCraft on a modern computer again.

Know what would be great? If I could get Diablo 1 and Warcraft 2 in any sort of digital format. Bonus points if they're in higher resolutions than 640x480.

D2 is still the Action RPG king; I think that entire genre is limited to this point, it's fun especially with podcasts but there's such great ideas and new concepts that have yet to be developed to make it even better.

Starcraft is the best multiplayer game ever but you can't revive the multiplayer so it doesn't really matter what you do with it. It's still going to be the best RTS game perpetually I imagine.

I would play an HD version of D2 for sure. esp if they added a bit of content. Its just a much stronger game than D3 turned to be.. I do wonder about the technical aspect of such an HD version. Would they use the D3 engine? that would probably make it feel alot less like the original game. Or somehow keep it 2d but make new sprites? that would seem like a highly unorthodox solution these days.Starcraft seems odd to remake since SC2 is almost the same game in so many ways. They would easily remake the original campaign in starcraft2 though.

Diablo II is still an amazing game. I'd love to see it come back but I have my doubts it'll ever happen.

My guess is they just add support for greater resolutions and then make them downloadable through the battle net client. Don't think these will be full remakes.

That's just what I was thinking. Sort of like the GOG treatment for older games just to make sure they run on modern hardware and operating systems.

Diablo II is still my favorite game of all time; all they'd have to do to get me to play it again is make it run at a bigger resolution than 800x600.

Also, it'd be nice if I could access/download my copies of the D2/WC3/SC1 battle chests through the battle.net launcher instead of having to go to their website, but that's not make or break.

I'm probably just a crazy person but I'd genuinely like to see a adaptation of the old RTS games to work on a tablet. Alternatively seeing them bump up Warcraft 3 would be nice since I spent far too much time on that in High School.

Personally, I'd rather see the original Diablo. Not only is it the one that doesn't seem to work as well on modern machines, but I've always thought it was quite a bit better than D2. And yes, I know I'm in the minority on that.

I feel like there was some talk from Blizzard at some point to try and get Warcraft I and II working on modern systems.

I can see that perspective. Diablo 1 is in a lot of ways a very different game from where the genre it established ended up. It takes a lot of its inspiration from old dungeon crawlers and rougelikes, is less overtly focused on multiplayer and isn't as obsessed with color-coded random loot. It's kinda like the original Legend of Zelda, where one could make an argument that some of its ideas were never truly followed up upon in its own series.

That said, it's also fun to play Diablo 2 and realize how much that game is a template for every single loot-focused RPG of the last 15 years (and how it's still better than most of them).
