The bizarre thing for me is that 30fps is difficult to play with on PC, whereas if I play on console (and the framerate is steady), I barely notice it. I was really surprised to learn that KH2.5 ran at 30fps.

A lot of people have semi-psychosomatic problems with framerates (and resolution, and gold A/V cables, and wine quality, and a lot of other things). On PC, where you can easily show current FPS, you're more likely to see 28fps or whatever and assume it must be crappy, so you think it is. Whereas you might not have ever noticed if you weren't aware of that number, hwich is what happens on consoles.

Before people jump on this I am in no way saying framerate issues are made up or that people can't distinguish between 30 and 60, etc. Some people are more sensitive to it than others, just like how some people can see the screen flicker under 60hz and some cant. And lots of people who can't, say, see the difference between 30 and 40fps, or tell at a glance what a framerate is iwthout a side by side, convince themselves they can like a reverse placebo effect.

Yeah, I noticed that as well on the GOTY discussions. I also noticed that whenever they mentioned bad console performance, they called out FO4 and JC3 as if those have equal problems. I'm playing JC3 on an xbox one and it's...fine. Perfectly playable, with definite choppiness when you blow up really large objects or set off large chain reactions. But to call that unplayable is to ignore a very large gulf of "performance problems that do not really affect gameplay that much". Load times seem long but realistically I havent seen one over 60 seconds. Which is too long for comfort, sure, but people saying it was 5 minutes+ are again being hyperbolic.

Dipping under 20fps sometimes definitely sucks, but unplayable, really? You mean to tell me if that was the only version of the game that existed, you would literally not be able to play it, or would refuse to?

Then again, there's a FPS Police group on steam that refuses to play Undertale because it isn't 60fps so...

They've mentioned stuff like this a lot, about public perception taking hyperbolic comments as true, so you'd think they might be a little more aware of it. Vinny talking about how his family thinks the Xbox One is still always watching you, or that Battlefield 4 still literally doesn't work, etc

@cornfed40: Scott Pilgrim (and Wreck-It Ralph) use the references in support of a decent story, make clever jokes about them, and attempt to unpack or explore the things about those references that you loved in the first place. Cline (and Pixels and Family Guy) just stare at you and say HEY REMEMBER PAC-MAN? WHAT ABOUT GALAGA, REMEMBER THAT? over and over.

Part of it is that RP1 sort of kicked off a wave of similar empty-nostalgia stuff, which now people are starting to tire of and write about. And so naturally they go back and look at RP1 with new eyes and see maybe it wasn't so great after all, after it spawned Armada and Pixels and whatever else. Critics are human, they could have gotten caught in the warm glow of nostalgic references just like anyone before looking back and seeing there wasn't anything of substance there, or maybe rethinking how they feel about nostalgia overall, as Austin has been writing and talking about a lot lately.

@elko84: "I got it in my Lootcrate" is the most succinct review of RP1 possible.

@ripelivejam: It bugs me in the same way, yeah. When you have two consoles that are 90% similar and only differ on a small handful of exclusives, it doesn't really make too many people choose one anyway, so it just locks people out of games for no real benefit. I made my console choice based on price, tradein serendipity, and timing, basically, so now I feel like I'm just locked out of Uncharted and Last of Us and such for no real reason. I'd feel the same about Halo and Forza if I went the other way. I'm not going to buy two consoles that overlap that much just to play one or two games, just like no amount of wanting to play Mario Kart 8 would make me buy a WiiU.
