Kawika's Game Journal of 2014

Update 1/2/2014: Its a new year and I decided to do it all over again. I enjoyed the journal last year. It made the games I played a lot more memorable. I might track trophies & achievements this year. I don't really care about that stuff so its likely I won't but its just a thought.

Well its July and I have completely neglected this list. I am going to try to put it in some order. Dates may be alittle off and games might be out of order.

Wow, that was a great game. I really powered through it. This is a big game and I for whatever reason felt I should collect it all. I think the game could be finished a lot quicker if decided to just skip out on some of the collectibles.

I skipped AC3 and I really feel bad for doing so. Everyone hated AC1 and I loved it. It had its problems but in the end my take away was greater than what was repetitive.

Without spoiling anything about the story or the characters, the game ends in a satisfying way with one exception. Does anyone care about the real world sequences? Some people didn't like Desmond but I thought he was infinitely more enjoyable to the faceless soulless Goo...Abstergo employee you are forced into. If Ubisoft wants to keep the modern day thing going, they need to make it worth while. I thought that whole bit was a waste of time and completely devoid of fun.

Black Flag was great. I really hope they start mixing these franchises up a lot more. I think it would be nice to alternate between these black flag style games and the traditional AC games.

If I finished this last year, I think it might have made my game of the year. 15 days late isn't that bad. Who am I kidding, it still would have been Last of Us.

    1/2/2014 Update:

I couldn't finish this in December so it will be the first game pushed from my backlog to 2014. I am loving this game. I really, really don't want it to end. This has been my favorite AC game since AC2. Without getting too deep into the story, I really miss actually playing an Ezio or Altair type of character. Maybe the monastic story line has gone a little stale but maybe it just needs a little more attention too. Either way, this game is great and I think I am going to buy the DLC for it.

What a wonderful game. The Scandinavian styled fairy tail of two brothers on a journey to save their father. Emotional, funny, and breath taking, this journey tested what I thought possible in a game's story. Even more so, because there wasn't a single line of text or one actual word spoken.

I highly recommend this game. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is up there with Bastion as far as one of my favorite downloadable titles.

So I'm counting this as a game finished because it was a complete side story. I was able to max out all classes and max out my character levels. I'm really excited for the main game now.

  • Alpha

  • Destiny Alpha Build:

I leveled up all 3 characters from 3-8

  • One does not simply beat Mario kart. Sure you can beat the various difficulties but half the fun is unlocking all the vehicles, hidden characters, upgrades and challenging yourself to get golds in all events. I finished the 150 cc mode but I have yet to get gold in all the tracks. I did however, unlock mirror mode. Will be playing more of this on my next game lull.

Score: Buy a Wii U for this... seriously... buy a Wii U.

  • Destiny Beta Build

  • Picked it up again. I am not 100% sure I will be finishing it. It may have been too long since I started

  • Platform: PS4

Was surprisingly long and I can't remember I enjoyed a game in the Tomb Raider franchise as much as this one. I tried playing it on PC last year but it really didn't run as well as I would have liked. I am glad I waited to play it on the PS4. They did an excellent job raising the visual fidelity. As much as people are dogging these last gen remakes its really nice to play something that looks a lot nicer than it did on last gen hardware.

Game play was solid. I was surprised how often I would use a bow over an assault rifle. Finding the hidden treasures were challenging and kind of fun. I was able to level up and unlock all skill ups and levels ups during the course of 1 play through. I won't replay it or touch the MP but I enjoyed the single player romp for what it was.

It also added 24 level ups to my yearly level up challenge.

    Score: Play it.

Black Flag is like Skyrim in that I like to play a few missions or collect a few things and quit. You need to use the companion app to manage your fleet while you're not at the PS4.
