Game of the Year 2014

2014 wasn't really a great year for games in my opinion. I can't even come up with ten titles that I thoroughly enjoyed from this year. I only own a PC and a 3DS so there might be great games out there that I am missing out on (Bayonetta 2).

List items

  • I already fell in love with the music, atmosphere and art of Transistor, before it was released. On top of that I was really impressed by the combat and different synergies and had fun playing around with it, even after playing through the game.

  • Follow-up to one of my favourite Action-RPGs of all time, Dark Souls. I might've enjoyed Dark Souls more, but that just might be, because it was the first Souls game I ever played and experienced the challenge and dark and gloomy setting for the first time.

  • FTL is probably one of my favourite games of all time. Every few months I will fire it up again and play it for weeks. The Advanced Edition is 'just' more FTL, but adds some nice little additions.

  • Diablo III was a huge disappointment for me, but Reaper of Souls improved the game by a whole damn lot. By removing the RAH and increasing the drop rate, the game instantly becomes more fun. The expansion made a disappointing game into an amazing game, that I pumped hundreds of hours into and in my eyes a worthy successor to Diablo II.

  • I never was really big into the original BoI, but somehow I decided to pick up Rebirth and already put in an ungodly amount of time. Every new run has the potential to present you with totally new ways how you approach the game.

  • Right now, I'm not very far into the game. But I already love what I saw. The sidquests might be monotonous, but the conversations with your party and the story missions are blowing me away.

  • I feel like I did not enjoy the game as much as many others did. At parts I found it way too easy and I only had a couple of memorable encounters via the nemesis system. Still, it's an amazing open world game, that I thoroughly enjoyed.

  • I'm not a big 'Smash-Guy', but playing the game is just pure fun for me at the moment.
