No. Chronologically ODST comes after the end of the level Metropolis in Halo 2 anyways. It only has the Halo 3 moniker because it uses the same engine. Completely self contained.
Start with Fall of Reach- great starting point and primer. They just released an updated version today actually, which I haven't checked out yet.
Anyways, if you like FoR, move on to First Strike, then Ghosts of Onyx. Those are the core ones you should hit. Evolutions is short stories, Cole Protocol elaborates on a Spartan team mentioned briefly in FoR, Contact Harvest is the start of the war. Skip the Flood, it's just Halo: CE in book form.
If you have more questions feel free to ask, I'm quite well versed in the universe.
" I think Jeff somewhere at one point specifically said he wanted to keep IRC separate from the site. I forget the exact reasons though. "
Because most people are mostly dicks on the Internet, and Whiskey Media doesn't want to give said dicks another platform to be a dick on? "
Nah, because they want to encourage clicks, and when you're sitting in an IRC chatroom you're not exactly clicking on anything, thus not loading any ads or giving the site any hits. There was some discussion of it when Jeff was on the BSHAf forever ago. Ultimately I think running independently has only been good for the channel- lets it be a bit more relaxed and casual.
@Brackynews: Though Will was wrong about Bungie.net integration, the 360 dashboarrd DOES recognize that you'v been playing OG Xbox games, at least locally. They show up in your achievements list as something like: Halo: 0 of 0. That data's probably not really accessible to Bungie, but the 360 at least does recognize that you've played it.
