I bought an Acer XB271HU Predator (27" IPS panel, 1440p, 144Hz with G-Sync) about 2 months ago for the equivalent of ~$650 USD, and don't regret the decision at all! I play mostly single player games also, and the monitor is absolutely worth the money to me as games look so much smoother at framerates above 60 hz. Movement feels so much more responsive also as you don't have to run v-sync, and the latency is lower overall. Don't understand the arguments at all that these monitors are for multiplayer/esports, because surely having a game look smoother, run faster and be more responsive (with no tearing) would make any single player more enjoyable? Sure you don't "need" it, but you don't "need" a GTX1080 just to run the lastest games, but we all choose to because we want to pump the video settings up and maintain a stable framerate!
Falconer is right in that there's zero point going a 144 hz monitor unless it has G-Sync, as the main benefit of these screens is being able to turn off v-sync and run any framerate with no tearing. If you go a 1440p monitor you'll definitely need at least a GTX1070. I'm running a GTX980Ti and easily get above 100 Hz in most games on High settings (100-120 Hz in overwatch, 90-120Hz in Doom, 80+ in Arma 3 with the settings cranked wayyyyy up, 70-90 Hz in Deus Ex MD).
I'd go with the Acer Predator XB241H as Giantstalker suggested mate. It doesn't have the resolution/IPS screen of the XB271, but it's so much cheaper and you'll easily be able to push 100+ Hz with a GTX1070/1080. That said, the XB271 is worth the extra cash if you can stretch the budget!
