@dystopiax: The lot of us really need to establish a difference between "improvements aren't possible" and "Bethesda's distinctive 'jank' isn't fixable with current design knowledge".

Nobody has said you should expect nothing, or that no improvements will be made. The mechanical problems that Bethesda haven't managed to solve aren't present in Xenoblade Chronicles X because that game isn't even dealing in such gameplay systems that would wander anywhere near that complex web of intereacting systems.

Whether or not those systems are actually worth all the hassle is a much more rewarding discussion.

@eggheaded: But what does Xenoblade working, under any number of employees, have to do with Bethesda games being so janky? I don't understand why people keep using Xenoblade as proof of jank not being a requirement. Xenoblade and Fallout 4 just aren't doing the same thing. It doesn't matter how many people are managing to pull it off if "it" isn't what makes Bethesda games uniquely desirable.

I'm starting to think most people aren't really understanding what separates Bethesda games from other open world games/rpgs.

From my perspective anyone playing Bethesda games solely or primarily for narrative or world immersion has at least a few recent releases to satisfy them. Those looking for a game with as much freedom in just how you interact with such a large world have...pretty much Bethesda games.

@comradesolar: ratio between reach and grasp is too broad to properly explain the presence of Bethesda games jank. One or the other having a better realized world is a very different argument. Bethesda games are janky because of the nature of so many game changing mechanics interacting with each other and creating such different outcomes.

Vinny pointing to Xenoblade as a reason to believe Bethesda games shouldn't be so janky is only relevant to a discussion about whether or not Bethesda should be attempting to make their flavor of games at all. Should they continue to make such mechanically open games you simply have little reason to think any amount of horsepower in your console is going to change this jank situation.

If making a game that has barely any similarities is your answer to fixing Bethesda jank then it shouldn't be surprising why they (and many of their fans) would prefer the jank.

I don't think Vinny understands what aspects of Bethesda design are causing the notable breadth of bugs and general weirdness. Listening to him point to Xenoblade Chronicles X as an example of doing it "right", as if what's breaking Bethesda games has anything to do with why Xenoblade is impressive, was really frustrating.

"I don't think you're understanding me" was beginning to stick me right between the ribs.

I don't understand where the fear is supposed to be in this game. As someone who enjoys being terrified by scary games it doesn't look like the developers understand what makes something scary.
