Hey duders, I'm kinda depressed today. My dog, Rupert, was just put down this morning.

Two weeks ago he swallowed a shard of bone and perforated his intestine for which he had surgery. He's been up and down for the last week but a few days ago he was looking like he was getting better. He would eat and go for walks and generally looked happy.

However he took a turn last night and when we took him to the vet this morning they told us he had peritonitis and infection had spread to his heart. Being a 13 year old dog, he wouldn't be able to recover from any more surgery and unfortunately he had to be put down.

I've had Rupert since I was 8, I'm going to miss him.

Condolences, man. Losing a long time friend and family member is tough.

I swear someone made a thread extremely similar to yours like a month or so ago, changing their avatar and posting a picture of their dog as well. I only remember because it was equally depressing.  

He is a beautiful dog and I'm sure a great friend, I'm sorry for your loss.

He's been my best mate for 13 years, through every time I had to move and leave my other friends behind.

Sorry if I made this sound too depressing.

My dog passed away a few years ago and I was miserable for weeks. I know how it feels. We're all here for ya mate.

I'm sorry to hear that. I remember when my old dog died. My dad shot her because her hips were so bad she couldn't walk.
She was my best friend and it was really upsetting. I have a new dog now and if she died I'd be devastated.

Losing a pet can be extremely painful, and I'm sorry for your loss. Condolences.

Sorry for your loss, duder.

My dog passed away while I was away at college, so I never got the chance to see him before he died. That was a horrible feeling the day I got that phone call from my parents.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My fiance is a vet tech and we're quite familiar (professionally and personally) with how bone shards can be dangerous. Hang in there...

Just remember, 13 years of happiness is worth the few days of sadness.

Never had a pet so I don't know what you're going through but I guess its better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.

I'm really sorry for your loss. My childhood pet, also a dog, was put down a few years back. He was suffering from arthritis. It made him grouchy all the time, and eventually our vet recommended we have him put down. Regardless of whether or not there is an afterlife for any of the people or creatures in this world, I know he isn't suffering anymore, and that's comforting.

My current pet, a small dog named Casey, has lived out about half of her lifespan, and it makes me sad to know she will be gone some day, probably before me. But I'm happy about all the time I get to spend with her between now and then.

my brother is at uni in Bathurst (about 3 hours away) and I had to call him and tell him.

That sad feeling never really goes away; especially if you really cared for the darling.

But it's always worth the good times, and you learn to like reminiscing. : )

at least he lived really long. the dog I got in 2003 died recently, its not uncommon for that size of dog to die at that age, but of course I was still crushed. 

...My dog is currently going through some stuff too, all I can do is hope that he is gonna be alright. I'm sorry to for ya man, I know the feeling of losing... your best buddie/family member... I know that feeling exactly... Oh dear God this is making me tear up! I am serious, I am truly sorry for your loss.

My dog was looking pretty terrible too a couple days back, he couldn't move much without doing a horrible sounding noise and was worried about that but I took him to the vet and it was just a pulled muscle or something<_<. hes fine now though
 
But yeah Ive lost a dog before too and it sucks

My condolences. I swear my two dogs are my best friends. We got them in 2001 and they're getting old. Not looking forwards to their death. It will be quite sad.

Just this last April I lost my 13 year old dog (she was a couple weeks away from turning 14). A year ago she began to act real sluggish and stopped eating her food. We took her to the vet and found out she had diabetes After giving her insulin shots though, she started to recover and was as healthy as ever. Then in April she got out the door when we left somewhere and got hit by a car. All this to say I know what it's like to suddenly lose a pet from an accident. It's a terrible shock. After a couple weeks you might want to look into getting a new puppy. It won't be the same, but it will help. We got a new puppy, which certainly helped us deal with the grief.

All that said, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Really sorry for your loss. Losing a dog is already tough, but losing a pet who you grew up with like that is really rough. I went through a similar thing; We got her in '98 aswell, I was 10. We had her put down in 2008 and that was really hard, losing a pet who was always there as I was growing up.
